The Y Canberra is Safeguarding accredited by the Australian Childhood Foundation and also meets the Safeguarding licensing standards of Y National covering areas such as recruitment, training, interactions between staff and participants, policy and procedures and building a Safeguarding culture.

About the role

The Safeguarding Manager role fits within the Safeguarding Risk and Quality team, and has a number of key objectives:

  • Empower and educate our Y People, young people, their families and their communities on a regular and ongoing basis;
  • Embed preventative measures in a time efficient manner;
  • Respond to all safeguarding concerns within prescribed timeframes, noting traumatic materials may form part of the concerns you are managing;
  • Pass and maintain compliance with the Australian Childhood Foundation/ approved external provider's safeguarding audit; and
  • Pass and maintain compliance with the Y National Child Safety Licensing Standards

Skills and experience

Qualification Requirements include:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications e.g. in Education, Social Work, Psychology, Social Welfare, Social Science or related discipline or proven experience in Safeguarding/ child safe organisational related roles;
  • Current registration (or ability to obtain) the Working With Vulnerable People (Clearance) and Working With Children Check NSW; and
  • Current Driver's License.

Experience and Skills requirements include:

  • The role requires an individual with sound knowledge of safeguarding practices and legislation to provide expertise and advocacy to the association in leading practice in the Child Safety Industry;
  • The role requires an individual with a calm demeanour and strong interpersonal skills to develop and nurture relationships with internal and external stakeholders, as well as a demonstrated ability to have complex and challenging conversations with staff, families and participants who could be children and young people;
  • Essential to the role is a high level of integrity and confidentiality;
  • The candidate needs to have demonstrated leadership and influence skills;
  • The positon requires excellent time management and an ability to effectively manage competing priorities in an accurate manner; and
  • The candidate will be committed to continuous improvement in both self and the Y Canberra.
