YFS is a not for profit organisation that backs vulnerable people in the Logan and surrounding areas to overcome adversity and to thrive.

Since 1983 we have been building people’s capacity to live independently and participate in our local community through a range of initiatives and services. These include a social enterprise that builds employment prospects; programs that help homeless people get into long-term housing and initiatives to reduce the prevalence of domestic and family violence.

Vision for reconciliation

YFS’ vision for reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is to develop and provide services based on respect and understanding. YFS acknowledges the past and works to build independence, participation and closing the unacceptable gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and other Australians’ health and wellbeing.

ABOUT THE BOARD

The YFS Board of Directors provides governance and strategic leadership to position the organisation for future growth and maximum impact. Directors benefit from mentoring and professional development opportunities. Director positions are voluntary; however reasonable travel expenses are reimbursed and membership to the AICD. Directors are appointed for two years with eligibility for re-election.

The current YFS Board is made up of Directors with skills, qualifications and experience in governance, financial, risk management, legal, cultural and not-for-profit experience. Refer to YFS website for an overview of our current Directors.

THIS OPPORTUNITY

YFS is seeking a Board Chair who will champion YFS’ purpose and strategic direction and YFS’ work in creating sustainable change in the lives of vulnerable people. The YFS Board Chair will provide leadership to the Board and assure the integrity of the Board’s processes in accordance with the YFS Constitution, governance policies and organisational procedures and systems.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Business-related competencies

  • Knowledge of corporate governance – the ability to facilitate the governance processes and ensure regulatory compliance
  • Leadership and facilitation – the ability to inform and brief directors on current organisational matters and strategies and the ability to lead constructive and timely discussion and debate, drawing on expertise of the board
  • Business acumen – a strong understanding of the organisation’s business and financial model and key elements which drive their performance
  • People skills – experience in motivating, managing and dealing with people including evaluating performance and succession planning

Personal attributes

  • Integrity – experience of meeting fiduciary duties and responsibilities, acting ethically, having appropriate independence, putting the organisation’s interests before personal interests
  • Collaborative leadership – the ability to inspire the individual contribution and participation of each Board member and senior executive to fully utilise their collective expertise to set the aims, strategies and policies of the organisation.
  • Effective communicator – the ability to engage and effectively communicate with all stakeholders.
  • Emotional intelligence – self-awareness and self-management, and the ability to motivate and empathetically manage situations where strong emotions are present.
  • Commercial astuteness – demonstrated good business instinct and acumen.
  • Engaged commitment – genuine interest in the organisation and its business.

Relevant Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrated leadership experience, in particular, guiding an organisation through change
  • Experience as a Chairperson in a range of different roles
  • Demonstrated capacity to build and maintain a network with/in government

Desirable

  • Positive profile with government and with a pre-existing network in areas such as Communities/Justice/Health
  • Experience attracting funding through public and non-Government funding mechanisms (e.g. Philanthropy, Social Bonds, Community Fundraising, etc.)

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Sound knowledge of corporate and clinical governance requirements and processes
  • A collaborative decision-making style
  • Demonstrated interest in the health and well-being of people

Desirable

  • Communications skills including media liaison experience
  • Knowledge of community-based organisations

TIME COMMITMENT

YFS directors are appointment for two-year terms with eligibility for re-election. A contribution of approximately 12 hours per month is required, which includes participation and preparation in 10 Board meetings per year and additional representation of the organisation with the CEO.
