Organisational Environment

YAY was established by youth and community leaders to offer support to marginalised disadvantaged youth consistently falling through the cracks. YAY is a non-profit organisation that assists disadvantaged multicultural Australian youth to re-engage with their communities. YAY aims to bridge the gap that currently exists between different government organisations, non-profit agencies and other service providers. Since 2014, YAY has grown from a youth-led committee into a not-for-profit organisation with a diverse and multidisciplinary board and a committed team.

Position Objective

The Justice Officer is focused on providing support services to vulnerable young people, and to strengthening their relationships with their families/support networks. This will be achieved by supporting approaches that engage and meet the needs of young people.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work within the philosophy, policies and procedures of YAY ensuring youth support services are consistent with this framework.
  • To operate under the guidance of relevant funding agreements ensuring compliance to provided outcomes and service standards.
  • Understand and acknowledge duty of confidentiality to ensure they will not at any time disclose to any unauthorised person confidential information of the employing organisation which comes to their knowledge during the course of their employment.
  • Ability to work sensitively and professionally with young people, family/community or support networks.
  • Support young people at risk in the form of information, advice, advocacy, engagement, mentoring, referral and case management.
  • Undertake outreach with other YAY team members.
  • Undertake all relevant administration duties, including accurate documentation of all relevant client information, case notes and program outcomes
  • Support the Programs Coordinator Justice and Engagement, to provide creative engagement approaches for vulnerable young people.
  • Organise and participate in activities with young people
  • Maintain database and manage client referral network information within local community to support needs of young people.
  • Liaise with external government agencies as required
  • Be part of a professional team working collaboratively with other members of the YAY team.
  • Attend external meetings and network meeting as required
  • Strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills and have the ability to relate effectively with a broad range of young people.
  • Complete reports as required including monthly statistical reports
  • Recent experience and competency in the use of computer technology, including the Microsoft Office suite of programs and a willingness to learn operational database software systems
  • Assist other team members in providing a safe and reliable workplace and to report matters pertaining to Work Health and Safety and Incident Reporting.
  • Any other duties consistent with position requirements.

Key Result Areas

  • Program is delivered related specifically to outcomes reported quarterly.
  • Assist with planning and developing youth programs to support needs
  • Ensure client confidentiality is consistent with company policy and legislative requirements
  • Ensure in accordance with YAY processes ongoing training and development are continued
  • Performance Indicators Ensure you are familiar with YAY Policy and Procedure, OH&S, behaviour guidelines and confidentiality requirements.
  • Maintain client files, case notes and contact list Client information is recorded consistent with procedures, and case notes completed in a timely manner.
  • Client contact information is maintained and is current and accurate
  • Maintain list of referral services consistent with program
  • Research referral providers and information maintained is current and accurate
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships with other team members including volunteers.
  • Maintain Youth equipment assets (e.g. pool table, sporting, art supplies, PS3, Music equipment)
  • Maintain all assets consistent with Work Health and Safety regulations. Ensure all equipment is cleaned, accounted for and locked away in designated area after each use.

Selection Criteria

Skills and Attributes:

  • A friendly, positive and professional attitude in dealing with clients and staff, including good verbal/written communication.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy skills, including the Microsoft suite.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Qualification in Youth Work desirable
  • Experience working with young people marginalised by issues including homelessness, mental health and alcohol and other drugs desirable
  • Current First Aid Certificate/Current Police Checks/WWC
  • Understanding of community development
  • Sensitivity and experience working with multicultural youth
  • Strong level of written, oral and interpersonal communication skills
  • Undertake tasks with efficiently and effectively
  • Basic ability to prepare reports
  • Ability to liaise with internal and external stakeholders
