Yarra Me School is a Department of Education and Training school specifically catering to 'at-risk students' with significant social, emotional and behavioural challenges. Yarra Me School delivers specialised and personalised therapeutic programs as a top tier of the School Wide Positive Behaviour Framework.

Yarra Me School delivers a range of intake programs and outreach programs. The Junior Program caters for students in Years One to Three, and the Senior Program caters for students in Years Four to Six. Both programs provide are a short term intervention for students who are exhibiting significant behavioural difficulties in their main schools.

Referrals to these programs are accepted from primary schools located in the metropolitan area of the North Western Victoria Region. These programs operate from our main campus in Preston. The education program at the Hurstbridge Farm is provided within the DHHS setting. Referrals to this program are only made by DHHS.

Yarra Me School Outreach programs have been developed to assist schools in developing the capacity of school staff to better understand and support the needs of students with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. Yarra Me School teachers work in collaboration with referring schools in a mentoring role to develop a broader range of strategies to support students in presenting with challenging behaviours.

Selection Criteria

Essential 

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in Pediatric Occupational Therapy services including experience in assessment, development and evaluation of sensory and fine-motor skills to aged 5 to 18 years.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of therapy provision in a special school setting and understand school reporting assessment tools as well as the ability to provide secondary consultations to teachers and families.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in provision of functional living skills (specifically social/emotional and environment), sensory and fine motor programs as well as the ability to provide training and secondary consultations to teachers and families.
  • Demonstrated high communicating and interpersonal skills and the ability to engage successfully with teachers, agencies and families.
  • Registered with Australian Health practitioner Regulation Authority (AHPRA), recognised Higher Education qualification in Occupational Therapy and a valid Working with Children check.
  • Demonstrated commitment to own clinical professional learning and growth for both self and others.

Role

This position is two days per week, Monday and Friday.

The Occupational Therapist will be responsible for the provision of functional living skills (specifically social/emotional and environment), sensory and fine motor therapy services in a special school setting to aged 5 to 18 years students with behavioural/health impairments.

The successful incumbent will work alongside teachers and therapists in a multi-disciplinary context using contemporary evidence-based therapeutic and educational frameworks.

The successful applicant will undertake a range of duties including but not limited to; assessment, identification and establishment of functional living skills (specifically social/emotional and environment), sensory and fine motor programs, assessment and a range of assessments for reporting purposes and secondary consultations.

This position will suit a practitioner with an experience and knowledge in equipment prescription, environmental adjustments and emotional regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide Occupational Therapy services to Yarra Me School aged 5 to 18 years
  • To work alongside speech pathologist and psychologist to assess and review students learning needs
  • To develop and implement personalised functional skills programs for students.
  • To support students' sensory and fine motor abilities to participate in the classroom
  • To provide consultations to teachers, therapists and families to embed functional skills, sensory and fine motor programs within the curriculum.
  • To provide secondary consultations to mainstream school where the student is being transitioned to.
  • To provide support with environmental supports at the school.
  • To provide assessment reports and other supporting documents for funding applications.

Who May Apply

  • Approved tertiary qualification in Occupational Therapy that is recognised by Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Authority (AHPRA)
  • Registration with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Authority (AHPRA)
  • Current Working with Children Check.
  • Current Victorian Drivers Licence is essential.
  • Previous experience (at least two years) working as a occupational therapist in a school
