About YPN and the YPN Committee

YPN was established in 2018 and is led by a committee young LGBTIQA+ people from across Western Australia, passionate about using systemic advocacy to create a Western Australia in which all LGBTIQA+ young people are fully included, accepted and celebrated by their community. The committee has spent the last three years advocating for policy change, providing education to LGBTIQA+ young people and running safe and inclusive all ages events. The YPN committee consists of 12 young people and YPN has a general membership of over 200 young people.

YPN is not incorporated, and so the Youth Affairs Council of WA (YACWA) provides integral support, including employing YPN staff, providing office space, finance, and HR support. Some of YPN’s work may be delivered in partnership with YACWA. YPN and YACWA have an MOU in place which clearly sets out the relationship between and the responsibilities of each organisation.

About YACWA

The Youth Affairs Council of Western Australia (YACWA) is the peak non-government youth organisation in Western Australia. YACWA operates primarily as a human rights organisation that seeks to address the exclusion of young people in a rapidly changing society. YACWA is widely respected and has a strong and diverse membership which includes policy makers, academics, youth workers and, importantly, young people who are all passionate about achieving positive and meaningful outcomes for the children and young people of Western Australia.

Position context

The Youth Pride Network has been successful in attracting three-year funding from the Department of Communities to deliver systemic advocacy for LGBTIQA+ young people in Western Australia. This is the first time that YPN has received significant funding and has been able to engage paid staff. This funding has a focus on three main areas:

  • Policy advice and analysis
  • Education, skill building and awareness raising
  • Communications and building connection

The role of the YPN Project Coordinator is an important one. This person will often be the face of the organisation and work with and support the aspirations of the YPN committee to achieve the deliverables set out in the grant. This funding also allows the employment of a Project Support Officer, and the Project Coordinator will directly line manage that staff member.

KEY TASKS

The YPN Project Coordinator will be responsible for the delivery of the following key tasks:

  • Managing the oversight and delivery of the grant funded outcomes and deliverables
  • Engaging with a diversity of LGBTIQA+ young people (aged 12 to 25) from across WA using a variety of tools and methods to maximise participation and reach
  • Building strong relationships and networks with a variety of key stakeholders from across a range of sectors, including (but not limited to) health, education, community services both Government and not for profit
  • Using the lived experiences of LGBTIQA+ young people and research to translate into robust policy and advocacy work
  • Working with the YPN committee to create and deliver innovative education programs for LGBTIQA+ young people, the youth and community sector and the public, which may include training, workshops, social media, print information and other
  • Overseeing the promotion and communication of YPN policy, advocacy, education, and events, primarily through social media and the website
  • Seeking media opportunities and responding to media enquiries (where appropriate), including the development of media statements and media releases
  • Communication with and reporting on outcomes to the funding body
  • Seeking business development opportunities for YPN, which may include seeking out and writing grant proposals, fee for service work and establishing partnerships.
  • Providing line management and mentorship support to the YPN Project Support Officer
  • Working with the YPN committee to explore incorporation and moving towards becoming an independent organisation

SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential

  • Strong understanding of LGBTIQA+ issues and a passion for LGBTIQA+ advocacy
  • Demonstrated experience of project management, including the ability to work independently
  • An understanding of the LGBTIQA+, youth and community services sectors and the political landscape in WA
  • Strong written communication and research skills
  • Strong facilitation skills and ability to engage with LGBTIQA+ young people from a range of different backgrounds
  • An understanding of the critical importance of the lived experience of young people and ability to translate this into policy and advocacy
  • Strong respect for youth leadership and ability to take direction from the YPN committee
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills in a variety of settings

Desirable

  • Experience of delivering a grant funded project
  • Experience of supporting or mentoring staff either in volunteer or paid capacity
  • Demonstrated experience in creating policy documents, resource development, writing grant applications, and media communication
  • Experience with event planning and delivery
