The Rai Matak Program is an exciting program being implemented in partnership with Ho Musan Ida Foundation, xpand Foundation, Oxfam Timor-Leste and community organisations across Timor-Leste. It builds on the success Ho Musan Ida (HMI) and xpand Foundation have had in establishing HMI's community-led forestry model and becoming the first Gold Standard verified carbon forestry program in Timor-Leste.
The HMI model supports smallholder farming communities to grow and manage forest trees on their land utilising agroforestry principles, while capturing carbon from the atmosphere. This carbon is then sold through carbon credits across international carbon markets, putting an earned dollar in a farmer’s pocket while generating a community wealth fund to support village-based economic development.
The Rai Matak program aims to support replication of the HMI model in new locations with a number of local organisations. It will also support establishment of a Timor-Leste Carbon Foundation and promote a community-centred approach to carbon farming to the world. This project and position is supported with funding from the European Union.
If you are passionate about preserving the planet, believe in social justice, and are interested in occasionally working in a tropical climate, then this role is for you.
Qualifications and Skills
The successful candidate will provide forestry, forest ecology and geospatial support to all projects undertaken by the xpand Foundation including carbon accounting, forest inventory tasks, field protocol development, data analysis in Excel, cartography and land cover monitoring, and will assist with project documentation and work with international standards bodies and auditors to review and verify projects and other relevant tasks.
The role will be based in Oakleigh, Melbourne, with flexible working arrangements offered. Regular travel to Timor-Leste, including visits to rural farming communities across the country is expected.
If you have experience with community forestry, GIS, and carbon farming, we'd love you to apply.
