Position Overview:

The Anti-Violence Liaison Officer will support the capacity of frontline agencies working to eliminate sexual and domestic and family violence, to assist people with disability to build lives free from violence and fear.

This position is for a 12-month period and is based at Women with Disabilities ACT (WWDACT). The Anti-Violence Liaison Officer will support WWDACT to develop and implement training programs, adapt resources, identify and provide for any necessary reasonable adjustments and undertake other activities that contribute to the enhanced access to services for people with disability. The position will also work in collaboration with the Disability outreach Officer at Canberra Rape Crisis Centre (CRCC) and Domestic Violence Crisis Service (DVCS) to identify and address systemic barriers experiences by people with disability in seeking support around issues of violence, abuse and sexual assault.

Women With Disabilities ACT (WWDACT) is a systemic advocacy and peer support organisation for women and girls with disabilities in the ACT and region. WWDACT follows a human rights philosophy, based on the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). WWDACT is a Disabled People’s Organisation (DPO), governed by women with disabilities, and its proposals and recommendations to government are consistent with Article 4(3), and Article 29 of CRPD.

WWDACT recognises that people with disability experience high rates of violence, abuse and sexual assault and are seeking to support better outcomes for people with disability.

What you will do

  1. Identify and implement solutions to address systemic barriers experienced by people with disability in seeking support around issues of violence, abuse and sexual assault.
  2. Collaborate with the Disability Outreach Officer at Canberra Rape Crisis Centre (CRCC) and Domestic Violence Crisis Service (DVCS) on addressing systemic barriers and identifying appropriate supports to assist people with disability to build lives free from violence and fear.
  3. Assist staff working with people with disability to understand and implement crisis supports so that they can access supports and services that help them to build lives free from violence and fear.
  4. Establish and maintain good relationships with community organisations, crisis services, and government agencies to support reducing barriers for people with disability accessing services and accessing justice.
  5. Assist staff to support people with disability to navigate complex systems, including providing support to access disability and other supports as required.
  6. Assist with the collection of quantitative and qualitative data highlighting the experience of violence, abuse and sexual assault for people with disability.
  7. Create and maintain documentation including accurate client records, case conference notes, reports and other written communication.

Selection Criteria

  • Experience in direct work with people experiencing violence, abuse and/or sexual assault or relevant tertiary qualifications
  • High-level knowledge and understanding of the causes and consequences of domestic violence and sexual assault, within a feminist framework.
  • Experience of or an understanding of capacity building, conducting needs analysis, and action research methodology or similar.
  • Proven negotiation, interpersonal, and communication skills, including demonstrated experience in building and maintaining good working relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to work independently within a team environment, identify priorities, meet deadlines and manage a complex and evolving workload.
  • Current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Check) Act 2011 is required.

Desirable

  • Demonstrated experience supporting people with disability who have experienced violence.
  • Current knowledge of women’s services in the ACT community services and demonstrated ability to liaise with the sector to achieve outcomes for people who have experienced violence, abuse and sexual assault.

Special Conditions:

Child Protection legislation requires that the preferred applicant will be required to undertake an employment screening including a Police check.

Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act of 2011 legislation requires that the preferred applicant will be required to hold a current and valid Working with Vulnerable People card as proof of suitable employment screening and background checks
