Senior Policy Advisor - Climate Action

World Vision

The Opportunity to be a Changemaker…

This unique opportunity as the Senior Policy Advisor (Climate Action) will provide the successful candidate with the opportunity to lead policy thinking on climate change and development for one of Australia’s largest international development and humanitarian organisations.

Although the poor have contributed the least to climate change, they tend to live in the most vulnerable areas and often have the fewest resources to bounce back from disasters and cope with climate stresses. The successful candidate will research, analyse and identify feasible policy solutions for children, families and communities in developing contexts around the world who are on the frontlines of climate change. This will involve:

  • researching the current context, emerging trends and best practice, including distilling insights from World Vision practitioners and technical experts,
  • producing briefs, thought leadership reports and policy analyses,
  • engaging with advocacy and communications experts to translate public policy proposals and solutions into advocacy products
  • building effective working relationships with counterparts in civil society, government and the private sector,
  • and influencing key decision-makers and policy debates.

In this role, you will build on World Vision’s extensive experience in climate action and disaster risk reduction to influence decision-makers to change their policies and practices, with a focus on how the Australian aid program can better respond to climate change. In particular, you will focus on policy solutions and advocacy concerning children’s experiences of a changing climate, nature-based solutions to climate change, and disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation. You will work with advocacy colleagues to design and lead the organisation’s climate advocacy and influencing work, in partnership with internal and external stakeholders.

Who we are looking for…

Our dream candidate recognises this as their dream job.

They have high-level analytical and public policy development skills, the ability to persuasively influence internal and external stakeholders based on sound and logical reasoning and can handle media as a spokesperson on issues related to climate change and disaster risk reduction.

In addition, we are looking for someone who has:

  • Experience in policy analysis, research and development related to climate change and disaster risk reduction
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills, including the ability to build and nurture productive working relationships and partnerships
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Relevant qualifications in public policy, environmental science, international relations, international development or similar, preferably at master’s level
  • Ability to translate complex policy for others to communicate, often in tight timeframes

Field experience related to climate change or disaster risk reduction is desirable, but not required.
