About the opportunity

Working within a small team of staff and volunteers, the Community Development Worker plays a vital role in providing support and assistance to people seeking asylum attending the Asylum Seeker Welcome Centre. As part of the team, the role focuses on helping communities empower themselves, working alongside service users, inspiring them, supporting them and offering them guidance and opportunities for initiating social change.

The position is also responsible for the coordinated management of the Welcome Centre by providing information on issues relating to asylum seekers, including community referrals, educational opportunities and links to the community. In addition, the position has a key role in actively developing and planning community development initiatives working closely with Centre staff and volunteers

About you

We are seeking an energetic and experienced community development professional with a proven ability to work with people seeking asylum in Australia in a drop-in centre context. You will have experience in a similar role, knowledge of current trends, resources and information related to people seeking asylum to reduce social isolation. Proven experience in the provision of community based programs and proven ability to provide support and advice to people from multicultural backgrounds will be critical in this role.

Additionally, the ability to meet deadlines and schedules in order to achieve goals and objectives matched with your strong written and verbal communication skills including the ability to prepare reports and correspondence. Strong engagement and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to manage complex stakeholder relationships is vital in this role.
