We are looking for a passionate and dedicated Youth Workers to join our team. This is an amazing opportunity to be part of a new service within the organisation, transitioning children and young people to the new Intensive Therapeutic Care – Significant Disability (ITC-SD) program.

This program has a strong focus on facilitating and supporting young people, their families and key stakeholders, to recovery from trauma with a multi-disciplinary team-based approach to providing individualised, person-centred care. The practice across this program is underpinned by Wesley Mission’s philosophy of care – everybody contributes, an ordinary life in community and you can choose.

Please note: due to the clients this role will be supporting we will only be considering female applicants.

Key Responsibilities

  • provide individualised high-quality supports that promote the health, physical, emotional, social and behavioural needs and goals
  • support client in their day to day lives according to the individual care plans
  • maintain a high-standard of cleanliness, tidiness and comfort in the home environment
  • observe safety standards and protocols for that particular home and young person
  • create a dinner routine with nutritious meals
  • transport clients to various locations
  • assist with homework and engaging in suitable activities
  • work with the child to learn life skills in a planned and supported way
  • monitor the child’s supply of clothing, footwear, school materials and other belongings
  • as part of a team, identify areas where the child’s needs could be better met
  • work together with the House Manager to develop therapeutic interventions which will assist the child with complex issues such as grief and loss, making friends, managing their feelings and keeping safe
  • encourage child in identifying tools which help them label and manage their emotions, such as art, recreation, journaling and music
  • monitor their own emotional state during the child’s escalations and remain calm
  • ensure delivery of high-quality care leading to positive outcomes for the child, such as building relationship and life skills, engaging in education and improved health and hygiene
  • work within organisational policies, procedures and values and contribute to continual improvement of Safe Places service
  • other tasks as delegated by the House Manager.

Essential criteria

  • Diploma in Community Services or related area
  • minimum six (6) months experience working with children with challenging behaviours, such as verbal and physical aggression in a residential setting or in care or similar experience in a residential care or youth work setting
  • availability to do shift work and in-home sleepovers
  • ability to accommodate roster changes at short notice (we endeavour to complete rosters up to two weeks in advance, though changes may occur due to the nature of the work).
  • demonstrated experience working effectively within a team
  • ability to participate in team meetings, staff meetings, training and supervision, as required
  • experience and understanding of WH&S issues in the workplace
  • outstanding interpersonal skills; flexible, patient with the ability to relate well to all the levels of society with which Wesley Mission interacts
  • good written and verbal communication skills
  • intermediate computer skills
  • current unrestricted NSW driver’s licence (must have as a minimum P2 licence to drive a Wesley Mission vehicle)
  • current First Aid Certificate
  • current Working with Children Check and a satisfactory criminal history record check.

Remuneration

Salary and employment conditions are in accordance with the SCHADS 2010 Award + salary packaging.
