About the program

Mums & Kids Matter is a Wesley Mission program that supports mothers living with stable and managed mental illness by promoting healthy attachment, building parenting skills as well as psychosocial skills.

About the role

We are looking for Nursing Assistants with experience working with vulnerable families. The candidate will work within a multidisciplinary team that delivers a 24-hour residential service as well as in-house community service across NSW.

As a member of a larger multidisciplinary team, your key role will be supporting mothers and children by providing assistance with living skills, parenting skills and mental health promotion. This will include transporting clients to scheduled appointments, child minding and supporting mothers and facilitators during individual and group sessions.

Essential criteria

  • Lived experience of being a parent with mental illness, accompanied by the experience of finding a path of recovery and readiness to work as a peer within the Mums and Kids Matter program
  • Ability to share personal story of recovery in a professional manner
  • Good interpersonal skills that facilitate building open, honest, non-judgemental and trusting peer relationships
  • Commitment to work in collaboration with the program’s multidisciplinary team and willingness to assist in connecting peers with other community and clinical support options
  • Minimum of a Certificate IV in Mental Health (or equivalent) or willingness to obtain
  • Experience in working with families in the health/welfare sector or mother and baby
  • Knowledge and commitment to working in person-centred recovery-oriented approach
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills – including the ability to be adaptable, self-motivated and demonstrate empathy towards others
  • Must be available to work shifts across a 24/7 roster, including nights
  • Flexibility to cover community clients, when required
  • Must hold a current unrestricted NSW driver’s licence

Desirable criteria

  • Mothercraft skills
  • Understanding of child protection issues
  • Community child and family health experience
  • Working with children under the age of 5 years

Remuneration

The salary range for this position is based on the SCHADS award Level 1-3, depending on qualifications and experience.
