WIRES mission is to actively rehabilitate and preserve Australian wildlife and inspire others to do the same.

WIRES (NSW Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service Inc.) has been rescuing and caring for wildlife for more than 35 years and is the largest wildlife rescue organisation in Australia. WIRES has over 3,000 volunteers in 28 NSW branches involved in the rescue and care of wildlife, and we have a dedicated Rescue Office that operates 24/7, 365 days a year assisting the community to help native animals in distress.

WIRES receive around 170,000 calls annually, and in the last financial year WIRES provided rescue advice and assistance for over 100,000 native animals.

In response to the tragic toll of the catastrophic fires, extreme weather and drought on wildlife, WIRES is actively pursuing significant opportunities to help wildlife more broadly across Australia, including partnering on projects to improve long-term outcomes for native animals.

About the role

There is an exciting opportunity for a passionate, experienced wildlife Veterinarian to join our team and support our mission to actively rehabilitate and preserve Australian wildlife.

With over 3,000 volunteers across 28 branches, we receive around 170,000 calls annually and provide rescue advice and assistance for tens of thousands of native animals. We are the largest wildlife rescue organisation in Australia and play a major role in national community wildlife education.

This is a support role dedicated to improving our capacity to provide fast, professional, emergency rescue services and best practice rehabilitation for wildlife, by working closely with the team to develop our wildlife training.

Your new role:

  • Liaise with the training team to develop, update and deliver courses that improve emergency rescue, rehabilitation and release outcomes
  • Guide the development of our Emergency Response Training to deliver best practice advice and assistance.
  • Potentially attend rescues and assist with triage management during emergency events

To be successful you will have:

  • A Bachelor of Veterinary Science or equivalent and registration with Veterinary Practitioners Board of NSW
  • 5+ years’ experience working as a veterinarian in a clinic setting
  • Demonstrable competence in the handling, treatment and rehabilitation of native wildlife
  • Understanding of the Codes of Practice and their importance in wildlife rehabilitation
  • Understanding of the AVA standards and policies regarding the treatment of wildlife
  • Experience in wildlife triage, particularly in emergency events
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and delivering course content
  • Confidence in explaining and demonstrating key skills for training (possibly filmed)
  • Exceptional leadership, organisational and communication skills
  • Excellent record keeping skills with strong attention to detail
  • The ability to multitask and work well under pressure
  • A proactive approach and excellent problem-solving skills
  • Unrestricted ability to work in Australia
