WIRES Incident Response Coordinator reports to the WIRES Emergency Response Coordinator. This role is dedicated to improving WIRES capability to provide fast, professional, emergency rescue services for wildlife, as well as assisting with coordinating our emergency rescue responders in the field and monitoring critical rescues being reported through the wildlife rescue office. This will involve working closely with our branches, volunteers and relevant stakeholders to establish increased capacity to respond to major emergency events and improve outcomes for native wildlife.

Key areas of responsibility include:

  • Assisting with the coordination of our emergency rescue responders in the field who attend critical rescues on a daily basis, ensuring highest rescue standards at all times
  • Monitor all critical rescues received through our wildlife rescue office ensuring the best rescue service for wildlife is being provided
  • Coordinate and prepare our volunteer emergency response teams in the event of an emergency, and ensure that they are supported and receiving all the appropriate training
  • Act as a primary contact point for branches and volunteers for emergency reporting, management requests and emergency rescue support and ensure that they have all the appropriate equipment and PPE
  • Attend meetings with stakeholders and organisations related to emergency response which may involve public speaking.
  • Coordinate requests for on the ground assistance for WIRES branches, which could include organising travel and accommodation, the transportation of supplies etc
  • Coordinating the sourcing and distribution of emergency supplies to volunteers
  • Work with the Emergency Response Coordinator to help ensure all regional emergency support requirements are met
  • Provide regular updates with photos/short videos/stories (as/when appropriate) to WIRES media and communications teams and assist them to access key local contacts for appropriate media during emergency events
  • Willingness to be involved in media coverage of emergency events
  • In major emergency provide WIRES branches/volunteers any additional support required to best meet all local wildlife requirements

Key competencies:

  • Strong wildlife knowledge and experience rescuing all wildlife species
  • Detailed understanding of wildlife rehabilitation Codes of Practice
  • Veterinary training (desirable)
  • Willing and able to work extra hours when required in response to emergency events
  • Adherence to all WHS requirements as well as WIRES policies, procedures and requirements
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to multitask and work well under pressure
  • Excellent record keeping skills with attention to detail and the ability to easily use multiple software platforms
  • Ability to be extremely mature, punctual, reliable, patient, diplomatic and professional at all times
  • Proactive approach to work and excellent problem-solving skills
  • Strong customer service/focus skills with an ability to adapt to different personality types
  • Experience and confidence working with people who may be distressed and anxious
  • Demonstrated commitment to improve animal welfare outcomes and work well with volunteers
  • Positive attitude & ability to work in a team and manage a wide range of stakeholders
  • Committed to prompt rescue and care services prioritising welfare at all times
  • Openness to change and the flexibility to accommodate changing requirements to fulfil objectives
  • Maintaining confidentiality of all animal, case, volunteer and staff details at all times
  • Current Drivers Licence
