Willum Warrain (‘home by the sea’) Aboriginal Association is the voice of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people on the Mornington Peninsula. It is a gathering place where Aboriginal people come together to realise community aspirations and forge a shared identity.

Managed by an Aboriginal board, Willum Warrain is located in the coastal town of Hastings and provides information and referral services, charitable support, health and wellbeing programs, art and culture programs, and links between the Aboriginal community and the broader local community. Our core strategic focus is cultural strengthening.

Our Bush Nursery

Willum Warrain runs a Bush Nursery that is 100% Aboriginal community-owned, specialising in plants indigenous to the Mornington Peninsula. We share cultural knowledge, uses and meanings about plants important to Aboriginal peoples with the broader public.

We are seeking a Nursery (Horticulture) leading hand to start immediately in our Bush Nursery. The leading hand position is a part-time (3 days per week), 12-month contract to the right person, with the experience and skills to support the Nursery manager develop and grow our social enterprise.

Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Bush Nursery Manager, this role involves:

  • Contributing to all aspects of the day-to-day running of the Nursery including propagation, potting up and retail sales.
  • Maintaining stock and the site, including watering, weeding, cleaning, pruning, pest and disease control and general nursery maintenance.
  • Providing friendly and prompt service to customers in retail.
  • Selling of stock and point of sale operations.
  • Organising plant orders for pick up.
  • Ensuring other staff (nursery hands and trainees) meet daily production goals.
  • Support and lead volunteers working in the Nursery as required.
  • Implement nursery production plans as directed including seed collection and cutting propagation.

Experience

  • Horticultural qualification desired
  • Have a passion for native plants and gardening.
  • Good knowledge of plant identification, pest/disease control, soil health and nutritional requirements of plants.
  • Demonstrated recent experience in plant nursery production and sales.
  • Ability to lead, coordinate and work as part of the team or individually when required.
  • Highly motivated with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Be physically fit and able to perform repetitive manual handling tasks.
  • Working in an Aboriginal community setting

Salary

Full-time: $50,684.40 to $53,687.92 (this role is pro rata, part-time- 3 days per week) + Super + Salary packaging benefits.
