Roses in the Ocean exists to save lives and reduce emotional distress and pain.

We do this by innovating and transforming suicide prevention and driving and delivering system reform through the expertise of people with lived experience of suicide. We support organisations and government to engage and integrate lived experience expertise effectively and meaningfully.

Our key focus is on:

  • Implementing innovative solutions co-designed with community to meet the needs of individuals and communities.
  • Developing and supporting the LE workforce and SP Peer workforce while continuing to build capacity and sustainability in individuals and communities.
  • Driving reform towards a genuine ‘no wrong door’ approach by supporting all services to embrace lived experience of suicide informed practice.
  • Delivering high-quality, best practice capacity building training and service delivery, the impact of which is measured and reported on.
  • Walking the talk. Providing respected leadership in lived experience of suicide to individuals, the sector and government.
  • Building depth and sustainability into the lived experience of suicide movement, our organisation, individuals and communities, services, workforces and safe spaces.

Roses in the Ocean offer a range of capacity building workshops designed to help people with a lived experience of suicide find meaningful avenues for contributing to suicide prevention activities in their local communities or workplaces.

Everyone who works within Roses in the Ocean has a lived experience of suicide which is defined as ‘having experienced suicidal thoughts, survived a suicide attempt, cared for someone through suicidal crisis, or been bereaved by suicide.’

About the Role

Roses in the Ocean are looking to add to their pool of facilitators based in Queensland for both on-line and face-to-face workshops. You will be trained to deliver a suite of workshops.

This would be a perfect role for a self-employed Facilitator/Trainer who would like to use their skills and experience and give up to 2 days a month to an organisation dedicated to suicide prevention.

This role includes:

  • Facilitating 1/2-day, 1 day and 2 day workshops either on-line or face-to-face
  • Empowering people with a lived experience of suicide to appreciate the insights they have gained and to use their experience to enhance suicide prevention efforts
  • Drawing upon your own lived experience of suicide as you facilitate discussions with the empathy and insight needed to support a safe space for participants.
  • Helping workshop participants safely explore, articulate and share their lived experience.
  • Create an environment for people with lived experience of suicide to broaden their perspectives through genuine connection with others.

Facilitators bring a range of expertise through their skills-based knowledge, education and training, as well as a demonstrated capacity to:

  • Align with the Roses in the Ocean values.
  • Be comfortable talking about suicide.
  • Sit comfortably with another person’s distress.
  • Be able to deeply listen and provide people space to talk.
  • Practice self-care, including demonstrating an understanding of the causes of vicarious trauma and the self-awareness to reach out for support.
  • Embrace a learning and continuous improvement culture.

Workshops include:

Knowledge, skills and experience

  • 5+ years' experience facilitating/training
  • Compassionate, empathetic and person centred
  • Superior facilitation skills and the ability to supportively ‘hold space’ with participants sharing their lived experience
  • Excellent time management skills, the ability to balance conflicting priorities and to work to deadlines
  • A proactive, collaborative mindset and demonstrated capacity to work independently and within a team environment
  • Appreciation of the broad range of lived experience of suicide insights and perspectives and how to connect meaningfully for authentic engagement
  • Growth mindset and willingness to contribute to continuous improvement
  • Personal values aligned with those of Roses in the Ocean
  • Sector knowledge is desirable but not mandatory
