The White Ribbon Australia movement works through a primary prevention approach in communities, schools and workplaces across the country.

Our focus is on mobilising men, boys and communities to take become active in the social change needed to end men’s violence against women.

In May 2020, White Ribbon Australia was acquired by Communicare, a Western Australian for-purpose organisation, and launched with new campaigns that focus on community engagement.

The Role

The Strategic Communications Specialist strives to position White Ribbon Australia as a leading voice in the national conversation on gendered violence, gender equality, men’s role in eliminating violence against women. They are responsible for developing, implementing and coordinating a strategic communications plan across WRA, developing messaging and advocacy campaigns and other communications for a diverse range of audiences, and developing and executing campaigns that advance WRA’s purpose, brand, profile and impact.

The Strategic Communications Specialist will be accountable for guiding strategy and planning for all external WRA communications, including developing and executing strategies to increase WRA’s presence and influence in the community. They will lead the development of strategic communications to external stakeholders, playing a crucial role in the engagement of partners, workplaces, supporters, organisational service providers and advocates. They will also manage public facing campaigns and social media for WRA, enhance the application of the Salesforce database and engage and support WRA’s leaders through producing tailored advocacy communications materials and managing events.

Selection Criteria

The position requires:

  • Tertiary level qualification in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism or a related discipline or extensive experience in major corporations or non-government organisations in campaigns, communications, online and community organising.
  • A successful and proven track record as a strategic communications specialist in a community services / not for profit related environment.
  • A proven track record in the development and implementation of communications strategies and/or social justice campaigns that successfully support overall organisational strategies.
  • Demonstrated experience in media, public relations, advocacy and partnership development, with a focus on community engagement, community development and working with volunteers.
  • Demonstrated experience in online organising and strategic social media communications as well as utilising electronic direct mail to build supporter engagement.
  • Demonstrated experience in copywriting, content management systems, social media channels and event coordination.
  • A commitment to inclusive practices that enhance access for people from CALD or ATSI backgrounds to services and participation in national campaigns.
  • Satisfactory Police clearance (not older than 6 months from the issue date)
  • Unrestricted drivers’ licence
