About the role

Victims Assistance Program (VAP) offers specialist responses to victims of violent crime including intake and brief intervention, case management, (brokered) counselling services, and community education. Practice is evidence and trauma-informed and client-focussed.

Case Management staff work across locations in Melbourne's west: Brimbank, Maribyrnong, Moonee Valley, Hobsons Bay, Melbourne, Melton and Wyndham; with successful co-locations with police in five areas and an intake hub and office base in Maribyrnong. Clients are from the whole of the Western Region and it is possible VAP will extend reach and enhance access for community through additional co-locations in the future.

Note that this position may be co-located part of the week in Melton, Caroline Springs or Werribee Police Stations.

The VAP operates an intake and brief response service via telephone where clients (referred primarily by the police and through an e-referral system) are responded to and triaged. This is at 215 Nicholson Street, Footscray.

Your daily duties will vary but will include:

  • Provide trauma informed case management to victims of violent crime, particularly those of a serious and/or complex nature;
  • Provide case management (including outreach) to ‘related victims' of homicide;
  • Provide psycho-education to victims, police and the community
  • Support victims of crime to effectively navigate the criminal justice system
  • Work collaboratively with the police and other service delivery agencies
  • Where needed, make intake and brief assessment calls
  • Dependent upon need, this position may solely become part of the Intake and Brief Response team

About You:

  • Advanced skills in case management, reflective practice and care planning, particularly with people from diverse and marginalised communities
  • A good understanding of issues for people affected by violent crime, grief and traumatic bereavement.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the social and gendered context of family violence
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering an intake service with associated skills in the provision of psycho education and support, detailed assessments and appropriate referrals.
  • Experience in and/or understanding of working with the police and the criminal justice system
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Highly developed work organisation skills with the capacity to prioritise competing demands
  • Demonstrated information technology and computer skills
  • A current Victorian Driver's License is desirable
  • Working with Children's Check
