About the role

The role of AOD Counsellor sits within the AOD & Homelessness cluster at Cohealth, which aims to improve the health, wellbeing, housing and social outcomes of people who use drugs and/or those experiencing homelessness in the inner North West of Melbourne. In a multi-disciplinary team, the AOD Counsellor will support the Yarra public intoxication program to deliver an outreach based, after-hours health response to intoxicated people in the City of Yarra.

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Counselling, Social Work or similar, with minimum two years' experience in the provision of short to medium term counselling for the target population, a lived experience is highly valued.
  • Experience working with, and awareness of the issues that affect, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and people from marginalised communities
  • Ability to work with people who are disadvantaged with chronic health issues,
  • Capacity to engage and assess clients and provide appropriate immediate support and on-referrals about/to health and other community services
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution, negotiation and the ability to communicate effectively with people from diverse social and cultural backgrounds
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team in an outreach capacity as well as independently with minimal supervision

All Healthcare workers in Victoria are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19, you will need to provide evidence before commencing employment with cohealth.
