Women's Services Network (WESNET) is seeking a skilled and motivated person to fill a temporary (backfill) position as Australian Women Against Violence Alliance’s Policy Officer. AWAVA, one of the National Women’s Alliances, is a program of WESNET, which acts as AWAVA’s auspicing body. This is a back-fill position available until 20th of August 2021 with the possibility of extension depending on funding and staffing arrangements. Based in Canberra, the role involves policy and submission writing and analysis, and development of resources and policy documents to support AWAVA’s Advisory Group and broader membership.

Remuneration for the position is linked to Level 5.1 of the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010, currently at $41.89 ph (plus superannuation, leave loading and Work Cover).

WESNET is Australia's peak women's organisation working to eliminate domestic and family violence. AWAVA is one of the six National Women’s Alliances funded by the Australian Government.

The successful applicant will provide support to the AWAVA Program Manager to deliver the aims and objectives of AWAVA by:

  • Drafting policy documents, conducting policy analysis, providing advice to the Program Manager, and undertaking tasks as directed by the Program Manager
  • Assisting with advocacy and achieving AWAVA deliverables, including through liaising with AWAVA members and other relevant people, and supporting the Alliance’s social media activities
  • Drafting and/or assisting with the development of community resources
  • Helping to prepare policy documents (such as guidelines for participating in AWAVA activities and forums)
  • Helping to sustain AWAVA and participate in other related activities and events as needed

Key selection criteria

The following competencies are deemed critical for this role; please address these as selection criteria in your application:

  • Organisational skills: Ability to work effectively in a small team setting, meet deadlines and take direction, as well as working independently.
  • Administrative skills: Keen attention to detail, strong organisational skills, time, event, meeting planning and facilitation, priority setting and management of multiple tasks and deadlines. High computer literacy.
  • Written and oral communication skills: Strong communication skills for responding to queries from members of the public and AWAVA Advisory Group by phone and email. Ability to draft documents or written communications for different audiences; friendly, competent and persuasive communication style.
  • Online communications skills: Experience in online communications including updating websites, developing content for websites and social media platforms and developing communication materials.
  • Position content expertise: High level understanding of the gendered nature of violence against women in the community; an understanding of social identities and social inequities and how they impact women; an appreciation of intersectional feminist frameworks and the application of public policy to women, particularly women from marginalised backgrounds.
  • General: Demonstrated commitment to the principles and approach of AWAVA and WESNET as lead agency and a broad understanding of the community services sector particularly the women’s sector.
