About us

safe steps is a state-wide incorporated association funded primarily by the Department of Health and Human Services to provide a range of services 24 hours 7 days a week for women and their children who experience family violence.

About the program

The intake and assessment program is an access point for victim survivors to specialist family violence support and services across the state including crisis responses for those at serious risk of harm. The program is responsible for the provision of specialist family violence information, service navigation advice and referral, consultation for other professionals, assessment and triage, safety planning, family violence advocacy and access to resources that promote safety. Where family violence risk is assessed as serious and imminent provision of crisis accommodation and support, including activating local face to face crisis responses.

About the role

The Intake and Assessment Program Lead will play a pivotal role in delivering a best practice Family Violence crisis service within resources including ongoing evaluation and review of service outcomes by working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.

As an established professional, you are experienced in a crisis environment where reprioritising minute by minute is the norm and safety is the priority for clients experiencing many complex forms of risks. You will provide hands-on best practice directly linked to the service delivery including leading, developing and guiding staff by providing a consistent high level of support to your team.

About you

You must be able to hit the ground running and be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Tertiary qualifications in social work, behavioural science, counselling, psychology or related field
  • Extensive experience within the specialist family violence sector or working with those who have been impacted by domestic, family and sexual violence (telephone counselling advantageous)
  • Understanding of the specialist family violence sector in Victoria and of state-based legislation as it pertains to family violence, privacy and child protection legislation relevant to service delivery
  • Understanding of feminist theory and contemporary family violence practice including the gendered nature of violence, social justice principles, crisis intervention and working with trauma
  • Demonstrated experience in leading practice within complex service delivery contexts, in particular multi-disciplinary and multiagency approaches to the provision of services to vulnerable children, families and diverse communities
  • Demonstrated experience in providing reflective supervision within a family violence or other social service setting
  • Proven experience in driving cultural and practice change that fosters reflective and culturally safe practice
  • An understanding of intersectionality as it relates to diverse and marginalised populations experience and commitment to working with same
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a challenging and demanding environment, managing competing demands, and maintaining composure in times of stress – employing effective engagement strategies with staff and with clients in crisis
  • Willingness to commit to the living expression of safe steps values; courageous, feminist, empowering, ethical respectful, collaborative, reflective
