A challenging and Rewarding role has become available in a remote, beautiful, and affordable part of the Kimberley in Western Australia.

Walalakoo Aboriginal Corporation are searching for a Ranger Coordinator with a drive and passion to support our Nyikina Mangala Traditional Owners. You will help them manage their unique cultural sites, native animals, the environment and empowering the peoples of the Nyikina Mangala determination area.

You will be a capacity builder:

  • Providing support to Indigenous Australians to contribute to the maintenance and improvement of the Natural and Cultural environment.
  • Support Indigenous Australians to find and remain in sustainable work in land and water management.
  • Support Indigenous organisations to generate greater economic opportunities and contribute to the strengthening of language and culture.

The position is located 4 days a week out of the Ranger Base in Jarlmadangah community and one (1) day in Derby. It offers an attractive salary, including 9.5% superannuation and other allowances such as leave loading, district allowance, annual airfare where applicable, air-conditioning subsidy, rental assistance where applicable, salary sacrificing options and 5 weeks annual leave. A generous TOIL arrangement is also available. The position also comes with a company vehicle.

Applicants must address the following selection criteria:

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Experience:

  1. Experience in Indigenous land management work; or strong scientific, natural resource management, logistical, community development or practical skills relevant to Indigenous land management/Ranger activities
  2. Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work effectively with Aboriginal people to achieve shared goals
  3. Experience in developing and implementing Project Plans and managing work- scheduling
  4. Ability to develop partnerships/ strong relationships with research bodies and reporting to government and other funding bodies
  5. Demonstrated ability to innovate, adapt to changing situations, find practical solutions and work effectively through collaboration
  6. Use appropriate initiative and work productively with limited supervision in sometimes complex and remote situations as part of a geographically dispersed team
  7. An ability and willingness to work in a regional location and when required undertake extended fieldwork in remote areas of the Nyikina Mangala Determination Area/surrounding regions
  8. Strong written and oral communications skills
  9. Competence in the use of computers and Microsoft Office applications
  10. Current manual driver’s licence and competence in the use of a manual 4WD vehicle in remote and off-road conditions
  11. Possess or able to obtain a current Police Clearance and Working with Children Check

Desirable:

  1. Experience in training, development and/or management of Indigenous ranger teams
  2. Experience in the West Kimberley Region and good networks in natural resource management area
  3. Previous use of geographic information systems (GIS) in the workplace
  4. Experience in working with environmental management equipment, chainsaw, boats and other small engines
  5. Qualifications and/or experience in natural resource management, environmental science, training & assessment, anthropology or community development
  6. Experience in application and project delivery for Protected Area management
