The Victorian Trades Hall Council (VTHC) is looking for someone who wants to make a difference. We are seeking a motivated person at the start of their union journey to employ as a full time OHS Safe at Work Organiser.

The position is based within the VTHC’s Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) Unit. The OHS Unit’s role is to work with unions and stakeholders across the community to identify workplace safety and rights issues, educate Health and Safety Representatives and workers generally about their safety and rights and support and organise them in enforcing these when they have been put at risk.

We also campaign on OHS and Workers Compensation issues to improve the lives of all workers, including injured workers.

Duties Include

  • Organising Health and Safety Representatives and injured workers to win change
  • Using organising frameworks to manage, coordinate and grow volunteer power through our OHS campaigns
  • Building the capacity of HSRs, Unions and their members to resolve OHS issues
  • Community engagement with a focus on health and safety
  • Organising VTHC OHS events including our annual HSR Conference, International Workers' Memorial Day Service and an annual OHS forum

Essential Requirements

  • Commitment to social justice, trade union principles and the belief that everyone should come home safe from work
  • Sufficient knowledge of the OHS legislative framework
  • Strong communication and written skills
  • Ability to set priorities when faced with competing demands
  • Experience in developing and executing campaigns and strategies
  • Ability to apply organising frameworks to engage and mobilise community and individuals
  • Ability to work with a range of stakeholders
  • Ability to work autonomously and within a team
  • Demonstrated capacity to work with volunteers

Desirable attributes

  • Previous organising experience with a trade union or similar organisation
  • Some knowledge of the Workers Compensation systems
  • Valid driver’s licence
  • Experience with social media and database management
  • Experience producing video and other shareable content for online distribution

The position is based at Trades Hall in Carlton, Victoria, and will report to the Secretary through the OHS Team Lead. Attractive salary package, including a monthly RDO and 12% superannuation.
