Organisational Environment:

Victims of Crime NT Inc. (VoCNT) is a community organisation, established in 1995 to support people and communities impacted by crime across the Northern Territory. Our aim is to assist people to recover, restore and rebuild their lives through the provision of a range of support services. VoCNT also advocates for victims through community education and by ensuring public and government awareness of the needs of victims of crime.

Victims of Crime NT operates in accordance with its Mission Statement and values. All staff and volunteers adhere to Privacy and Confidentiality requirements, a Code of Conduct and actively participate in organisational planning and development.

The Victim Support Officer reports to the Victim Support Programs Manager, and works collaboratively with all staff and volunteers. The position is based in Tennant Creek and will require outreach work. Use of own car will be required and will be reimbursed as per the award. The organisation offers a supportive team environment and is committed to flexible workplace practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To provide victims of crime with effective and timely support to assist their recovery
  • To provide support in restorative justice processes for victims participating in youth justice conferences
  • To actively contribute to a positive team culture and a collaborative working environment

Duties

  • Provide in person and phone support to victims of crime within a needs assessment framework, that includes:
    • Information
    • Crisis support, including counselling
    • Referral to other agencies
    • Assistance in preparing victim impact statements
    • Court support for victims who are participating in, or observing, court proceedings in relation to the crimes that have affected them.
    • Advocacy
  • Provide support for victims participating in Youth Justice Conferencing (YJC)
  • Build effective relationship with key stakeholders to facilitate ongoing referrals to YJC
  • Represent and advocate for victims who choose not to participate in YJC
  • Undertake referrals and assist in applications to Crimes Victims Services Unit where appropriate
  • Develop and disseminate informative resources to the public, community groups and other service providers on the support available to victims of crime
  • Escalate critical risks or issues to VS programs Manager and recommend viable solutions
  • Follow up on Support Link referrals
  • Promote the availability of other VoCNT programs to clients and refer as appropriate
  • Enter all client data and each contact detail into the CDS database in a prompt manner

Qualifications, Professional Memberships, Experience:

  • 3 years experience in program roles, preferably in the community sector
  • A relevant tertiary qualification and/or experience in the Human Services

Desirable experience: Knowledge and/or experience with Restorative Justice processes

Previous experience working with victims of crime

Other Requirements:

  • Drivers license
  • Ochre card and Police check

  1. Demonstrated emotional intelligence and self-management skills.
  2. Demonstrated counselling and support skills.
  3. Understanding of Restorative Justice Theory and principles.
  4. Ability to plan and organise work to achieve objectives
  5. An approachable manner and the ability to build positive relationships
  6. Commitment to working as part of a team to deliver client centered services in a small community organisation.
  7. Willingness to work both collaboratively and independently to deliver organisational objectives.
