The Violet Initiative is a national social enterprise, not for profit organisation whose purpose is to support caregivers in their role of providing care and support for a loved one who is elderly and frail or approaching the end of life.

Violet is embarking on an ambitious 2-year strategy FY21-FY22.

The Finance Manager is a key role, at a key point in time: building a rigorous inhouse finance capability to support the CEO, Finance & Risk Committee & Board of Directors as the organisation grows and scales over the coming years.

The finance function has previously been managed externally. The CEO is seeking increased ownership, structure, improved processes, and increased accountability as part of Violet’s key team.

Given the size and start-up ethos of the organisation, the right candidate will be flexible enough to flawlessly manage all the mid-level components of the finance function, whilst being able to seamlessly shift to strategic and advisory functions, as required.

Key tasks

  • Payables and receivables
  • Payroll
  • Data entry into Xero
  • Bank reconciliations and reconciling credit cards
  • Preparation of the BAS
  • Cash flow
  • Reporting from Xero:
    • Monthly management reports (budget v. actual)
    • Development and reporting of key financial metrics
  • Working with the CEO to develop annual and half-yearly budgets
  • Liaison with the external auditors
  • Being pro-active around the development of systems and procedures to promote efficient internal administration, effective controls and accounting work flows
  • Work with the CEO to track & manage salary allocations against budget
  • Assist the CEO in tracking financial performance against strategic deliverables and partnership obligations.
  • Assist Executive with pricing modelling and growth forecasts
  • Important initial task of enhancing reporting and budgeting capability in Xero
  • Committee Member - Violet’s Finance Risk & Audit Committee (FARM)
  • Present Financial results and reports at bi-monthly Board meetings
  • Lead continuous monitoring & improvement in internal audit & risk control processes

Person Specification

Qualifications / Industry Experience / Specific Knowledge or Skills

  • 8+ years’ experience qualifications in similar senior roles (preferably in the NFP sector/social enterprise), reporting at committee and board levels
  • Have recent and hands-on experience with Xero, including setting up reports and otherwise configuring the system to project/activity based reporting
  • Be able to demonstrate advanced Microsoft Office/Google suite skills particularly Word, Outlook, Excel
  • Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Focus on accurate outcomes with an unswerving attention to detail
  • Have excellent organisation skills; whilst being flexible and adaptable to changing priorities
  • Have a high degree of initiative
  • Strong relationship management skills with the ability to engage stakeholders, identify value and solve problems in a dynamic environment
  • Highly developed organisational skills with the ability to plan, coordinate and deliver on multiple tasks in the time requested
  • Highly effective verbal and written communications and interpersonal skills with the ability to present credibly, concisely, and effectively at senior and technical levels

Reporting line

  • This role reports to the CEO
  • Currently there are no direct reports to this role - this will change as the organisation scales
  • Manages/liaises with contractors, suppliers, volunteers as required.

Budget/Expenditure

  • Nil financial delegation.

Hours and remuneration

  • It is envisaged that approximately 8 hours per week will be required. Additional hour may be require around key reporting periods, board meetings, budget processes etc.
  • Remuneration will be commensurate with experience.
