The Organisation:

The Victorian Allied Health Professionals Association (VAHPA) is an industry-based union for Allied Health Professionals working in Victoria in the public, community and private sectors. VAHPA is an autonomous branch of the Health Services Union—HSU Victoria No. 3 Branch.

Overview of position

The Industrial Officer (Member Response) is an experienced legal and industrial relations officer specialising in member advocacy and individual case management.

The IO (Member Response) is required to provide advocacy, guidance and assistance to VAHPA members, under the direction of the Branch Secretary, where necessary, with the assistance of the Senior Industrial Officer. The IO (Member Response) is further required to provide industrial advice and assistance to colleagues in the Member Response Team and to those in the Organising and Executive Teams where necessary. The IO (Member Response) is to work collegiately with all Branch employees to ensure VAHPA is best placed to pursue its objects and be true to its Mission Statement at all times.

VAHPA employees are to approach each and every work task with the aim of advancing the strength of the collective and of fostering member solidarity.

Industrial Officer (Member response)

  • Team: Member Response Team
  • Reports to: Branch Secretary via Member Response Lead
  • Location: Carlton, with responsibilities across the state. Travel, both intra and inter-state, may be required on occasion.

Selection Criteria

  1. Commitment to the principles of social justice and to the vision, values and objectives of VAHPA, including the ability to promote those values and objectives.
  2. An understanding of the central importance of solidarity and a commitment to the principles of organising and an ability to effectively engage and empower members, delegates and activists.
  3. Strong ability to understand, interpret and analyse awards, enterprise agreements, legislation and other relevant documentation and to provide realistic outcome-directed advice to members.
  4. Extensive experience in representing and advocating for members in meetings with management and relevant industrial tribunals.
  5. Ability to recruit members to the union.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work within a team environment and to work unsupervised.
  7. Computer skills relevant to the position.
  8. Experience working in the health sector.
  9. A current Victorian (or equivalent) driver licence; and
  10. Eligibility to hold a Right of Entry Permit in accordance with the Fair Work Act 2009 or subsequent legislation.
