VANISH Inc. is a secular, not for profit, community based organisation providing search and support services to individuals affected by adoption, state ward-ship and donor conception.

We are seeking a new Accountant to provide timely and accurate accounting management and finance support to the Manager, Treasurer and Committee of Management and to design and implement improvements to our finance systems and processes.

Key Tasks

  • Analysis of the accounts to determine the financial health of the organisation.
  • Preparing regular financial reports on an accrual basis (profit and loss, balance sheet, expenditure compared to budget).
  • Appropriately adjusting and apportioning income and expenditure processed by the fortnightly bookkeeper and calculating depreciation and reallocating costs and liabilities.
  • Developing the annual budget for Manager and Committee approval.
  • Maintaining a chart of accounts and monitoring the coding of expenditure.
  • Preparing end of the financial year reports.
  • Preparing accurate documentation for the independent financial audit.
  • Developing and streamlining finance systems and processes.
  • Providing financial information for proposals to funding bodies.
  • Identifying and applying for government grants and schemes.
  • Developing or reviewing finance policies and procedures
  • Ensuring compliance with ATO, ACNC and other relevant regulatory bodies.
  • Maintaining the assets register.

Selection Criteria

The following qualifications, experience and attributes are required:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Professional certification with Certified Practicing Accountants (CPA Australia), Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (CA Australia) or Institute of Public Accountants
  • At least five years experience as an Accountant
  • Demonstrated expertise in preparing monthly and annual reports, budgets and forecasts
  • A sound understanding of state and federal tax compliance and not-for-profit regulatory requirements (eg ACNC)
  • Demonstrated expertise with Xero and Microsoft excel, outlook and word.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good attention to detail and strong record-keeping skills
  • A demonstrated commitment to equality and diversity

The following criteria are desirable:

  • Relevant experience in the not-for-profit sector.
  • A personal experience related to the work of VANISH or a good understanding of what this experience means for staff and service users.

Terms & Conditions

Contract: one year with potential to renew subject to funding and performance.

Hours are one day per week (7.6 hours) with possible additional hours in busy periods. Salary Range: $40 to $46 per hour + 10% super + salary sacrificing package.

Annual leave: four weeks pro rata + paid grace days at Christmas. Other conditions are in accordance with VANISH employment policies.
