Overview

This position is funded by the Working for Victoria Fund as part of a grant agreement between VALS and the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions for a Senior Lawyer to provide legal services to Victorians affected by the bushfires and the Covid-19 pandemic.

The successful applicant should have a minimum of 4 years post-admission experience practising in areas of law relevant to VALS’ civil law practice. This should include at least 12 months of practice on an unsupervised practising certificate.

The successful applicant will report directly to the Principal Legal Officer of the Civil and Human Rights team. They will be required to provide high quality legal services, including information, advice, representation, casework, negotiation and dispute resolution, and outreach services in a range of different civil law matters relating to the impact of Covid-19 and the bushfires on behalf of members of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community in Victoria.

Key Performance Indicators, Duties & Responsibility

  • Provides high quality legal advice and representation to VALS clients across all key practice areas in the civil team as they relate to the impact of Covid-19 and the bushfires upon clients, including fines and infringements, VOCAT, tenancy, police and correctional services misconduct, discrimination, coronial matters, and other types of legal issues as appropriate.
  • Provides guidance and mentorship to more junior lawyers in the VALS civil team, including support with complex matters, client management issues, and court/tribunal appearance work, and assists with the legal supervision and delegation of work to volunteers.
  • Works closely with and support the team’s Principal Legal Officer and the Statewide Community Justice Programs Leader around the coordination and delivery of range of projects, policy and law reform initiatives, strategic litigation work, and community and professional legal education programs relating to the impact of Covid-19 and bushfires on our clients.
  • Assumes primary responsibility for appropriately managing various key stakeholder relationships with direction and assistance from the Principal Legal Officer and demonstrates a strong ability to manage and leverage these relationships to the benefit of VALS as an organisation as well as the Victorina Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community more broadly.
