Are you a driven policy officer who challenges the status quo? VACCHO are seeking a dedicated officer who excels in succinct and clear research and policy development to elevate Aged Care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders.

Organisational Overview

VACCHO is the peak representative for the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people in Victoria and champions community control and health equality for Aboriginal communities. We are a centre of expertise, policy advice, training, innovation and leadership in Aboriginal health and wellbeing. VACCHO advocates for the health equality and optimum health of all Aboriginal people in Victoria.

Role Overview

As a part of the Research and Policy team you will work with a highly motivated and positive group of people who are passionate about Aboriginal Health. This role focusses on bringing to the forefront the unspoken voices, understanding the profound importance and valued care of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders. You respect that these Elders are central to our Culture and Communities and keep the flame of our Culture and identities alive.

This role is varied and has the firsthand opportunity to develop a national strategy. Collecting data from members across Australia you thrive on a challenge and understand the importance on delivering to tight timeframes.

You will action the work of the NAGATSIAC to progress Aboriginal Aged Care and develop local, regional, and State-wide strategies which will assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander aged care providers to operate sustainably in a competitive/ marketised funding environment aimed at individual choice and control.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and coordinate implementation of strategies which will enable Aboriginal Aged Care Providers to:
    • determine and prepare for their role in relation to Aged Care reforms;
    • operate sustainably in an individualised/marketised funding environment
    • identify priorities of community needs and gaps in aged care services.
  • Facilitate and undertake activities to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Aged care providers and mainstream providers who specialize in providing care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people:
  • Undertaking research, analysis and policy development in relation to aged care, for Aboriginal community controlled primary health services across Australia.
  • Coordinating the expert input of NAGATSIAC members
  • Developing and providing advocacy and advice on aged care reforms VACCHO members.
  • Project management and coordination of the consultative and research processes and the provision of progress reporting to the NAGATSIAC members and to the funding bodies as required.
  • Participate in and support interactive and consultative processes with appropriate government and non-government agencies
  • Represent NAGATSIAC as directed on government working parties, forums

Other Employment Related Information

  • A National Police Records Check is required as a condition of employment
  • A current Working with Children Check is required
  • A Victorian Drivers Licence is required. The position will require travel throughout the state of Victoria and occasional interstate travel.

Desirable

  • Identifies as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
  • Tertiary qualifications in law, social and/or public policy
  • Minimum 2 -3 years’ experience working in a social/public policy environment in a similar role.
