The Victorian Aboriginal Child and Community Agency (VACCA) is an Aboriginal Community-Controlled organisation that supports and advocates for the Aboriginal Community and is the largest organisation of its kind in Australia. The Journey Walker position has been designed to walk alongside Aboriginal Community members impacted by family violence to ensure they receive the right services to meet their needs. The model is unique and promotes a strengths-based approach to working with Aboriginal families where culture is acknowledged as a protective factor against family violence.
This holistic approach to working with families means that Journey Walkers will have a sound understanding of the family violence and broader service system to empower Community members to make positive choices to keep themselves and their families safe.
The Journey Walker may also see Community members at different points in the system, from self-referral through to longer term support required following a specialist family violence service closing their case is an exciting new initiative which will enhance the integrated family violence service system in the Bayside Peninsula Area and support self-determination and agency of Aboriginal families to:
