OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE

This role will spread across the United Workers Union political strategy, with the organiser taking on a range of responsibilities including engaging members in politics, leadership development, supporting members in lobbying and engaging in election campaigns.

This position will involve out of hours work, field work, and travel for extended periods of time.

This is a flexible full-time position.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Recruit new members to the union and to the political program;
  • Support organisers in recruiting members to the political program;
  • Develop and support leaders in the political program;
  • Engage with and connect members with community campaigning;
  • Support members at political conferences and ensure United Workers Union members have the opportunity to engage in policy/conference motions relevant to the union’s interests.
  • Assist with the organisation of lobbying at all levels of government;
  • Engage in electoral campaigning for United Workers Union target seats across the country; and
  • Implement other strategies and campaigns as developed by the Executive Director and National Coordinators of the Political Power Portfolio
  • Ensure that the Union’s values of equity, diversity and inclusion are upheld and promoted.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

A Political Organiser demonstrates:

  • A passion and drive to improve workers’ lives and achieving the goals of the Union.
  • A capacity to organise within the Australian Labor Party
  • Ability to motivate and educate union members and potential members;
  • Ability to participate in the unions political and social justice agenda;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills;
  • Experience as an organiser preferred;
  • Experience in political organising preferred but not essential;
  • Experience in election campaigning preferred but not essential;
  • Ability to work flexible arrangements;

To perform this role you will also be required to have or obtain and maintain:

  • A valid driver’s licence; and
  • Right of Entry Permits

REMUNERATION

An attractive remuneration package will be offered to the successful applicant, which will include:

  • Salary commensurate with demonstrated skills and experience;
  • 16% superannuation
  • 6 weeks annual leave with an additional 25% leave loading
  • Salary range $52,000-$82,000
