You can help to advance this work, in an important and practical way

For research that involves the study of animals in the wild or in agriculture, or the use of animal models of human disease, UQ’s Animal Ethics Committees (AECs) review proposals and ensure that animal welfare is fully considered. It is required by legislation that the Committees include members from registered animal welfare organisations. Your input will help us strike the right balance between generating medical, agricultural, and ecological advances and recognising animal welfare and community expectations.

UQ has six AEC’s who review applications based upon a subset of knowledge and/or species being used. Each AEC meets on a monthly basis to review applications for research, breeding and teaching activities. Meetings take place at the St Lucia and Gatton campuses and/or by videoconference when required. Expressions of interest are sought for Category C members.

A Category C member is a person with demonstrable commitment to, and established experience in, furthering the welfare of animals. They must not be employed by or otherwise associated with the institution, and not currently involved in the care and use of animals for scientific purposes. While not necessarily representing an animal welfare organisation, the person must have active membership of and endorsement by, such an organisation.

Members must be able to read and access documents online, and be willing to be active participants in the meetings - raising questions and contributing their opinions. A mentoring program is available to assist new members in getting started should they be interested in this.
