The Organisation

The United Professional Firefighters' Union of Western Australia (UPFU) represents approximately 1200 Firefighters in Western Australia.

Appointment

The Union is seeking to appoint an Industrial Officer. Appointment to the position will be on a contract basis for a period of six (6) months commencing as soon as possible. The position is full time, though consideration will be given to part-time employment for the suitable applicant.

Wages and Conditions

An attractive salary package will be offered depending on the skills, qualifications, experience and ability of the applicant. The position will be managed by the UPFU Secretary and President.

The Role

The Industrial Officer will work to:

  • Provide develop and prepare of oral and written submissions, briefings and reports on contemporary industrial issues;
  • Research and monitor trends and developments in firefighting and industrial relations within Australia and internationally;
  • Provide research, advice and advocacy on employee and industrial relations issues including but not limited to:
    • enterprise bargaining
    • industrial disputes
    • discrimination in employment
    • workplace health and safety
    • superannuation
    • workers compensation
    • equal opportunity

Duties

  1. Research and analysis of contemporary industrial issues;
  2. Preparing submissions, reports and briefing papers for the Union;
  3. Preparation for and representing the UPFU in the WA Industrial Relations Commission and Fair Work Commission;
  4. Assisting members with industrial, equal opportunity and workers compensation enquiries;

Selection Criteria

  1. Legal and or Industrial Relations qualifications.1656304567_J6WAE_.jpg
  2. Demonstrated industrial and research skills including case preparation and presentation to various tribunals;
  3. Ability to work independently and in a team environment as the situation determines.
  4. Highly developed written and oral communication skills
  5. Strong commitment to social justice, workers rights and the values of the UPFU

Although applicants who meet all the selection criteria would be preferable, the Union will also consider applicants who can meet only some of the criteria but who have an interest in gaining experience in a Union or who believe they may be able to provide a valuable contribution to the UPFU.
