Why Your Role Matters:

The Centre for Social Impact (CSI) is a national research and education centre dedicated to catalysing social change for a better world. CSI is led by a national team (CSI National) and is comprised of four divisions based in four of Australia’s leading universities: UNSW Sydney (CSI UNSW), University of Western Australia (CSI UWA), Flinders University (CSI Flinders) and Swinburne University of Technology (CSI Swinburne). CSI’s research develops and brings together knowledge to understand current social challenges and opportunities. CSI’s postgraduate, undergraduate and executive education develops social impact leaders. CSI’s aim is to catalyse change by drawing on these foundations and translating knowledge, creating leaders, developing usable resources, and reaching across traditional divides to facilitate collaborations.

The CSI National Communications Director plays an integral leadership role within Centre for Social Impact (CSI) in developing and leading the implementation and delivery of CSI’s national internal and external communications, marketing and knowledge exchange at CSI National, and CSI UNSW, working closely with the CEO and CSI’s four partner universities.

This role is a national leadership position which works closely with CSI’s CEO and the national leadership team, CSI Board and senior stakeholders across the organisation and within partner universities. In addition to the 0.75 FTE national communications director role, the position also holds a 0.25 FTE accountability for targeted communications for programs within the UNSW Centre for Social Impact. Note this split is subject to change to a role with full time national communications responsibilities only.

The position is a full-time, 3-year fixed term role. The role reports to the CSI CEO (0.75) and also has a reporting line to the CSI UNSW Director (0.25). This role has both direct and indirect reports.

Responsibilities:

  • Act as the brand custodian for the CSI network, including managing and continually developing CSI’s brand profile and positioning CSI as an influential driver of systemic social change.
  • Develop and execute an external communications strategy, including strategic media relations, events, conferences, stakeholder engagement and digital content as well as other communications materials to maximise awareness and drive user engagement with CSI’s thought leadership across Australia.
  • Develop and execute an internal communications strategy to enable collaboration and communication across the CSI Network.
  • Curate and oversee the translation of academic knowledge into highly accessible and impactful content. Work with CSI staff across the network to synthesise complex issues into clear messages.
  • Support the CSI CEO as the highly visible spokesperson of CSI, including through written internal and external communications.
  • Identify and secure opportunities for the CEO and national leaders to participate in media opportunities, attend events, conferences, public forums (including digital forums) and have an effective presence on social media, with the aim of increasing the visibility of CSI and its work.

Who You Are:

  • Demonstrated ability to develop, plan and successfully execute and operationalise communications strategies in a complex structure and/or national setting
  • Relevant experience in leadership, strategy and communications or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience.
  • Extensive marketing and communications experience including solid media relations, stakeholder management, digital marketing, content strategy and production, events and campaign planning and execution.
  • Ability to interact collaboratively and effectively across multiple teams and stakeholders to manage complex projects within tight timeframes, including translating academic or technical information into accessible and marketable content.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with high-level influencing skills and the ability to work at all levels of a complex national organisation and within our four partner universities.
  • Exceptional organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities through strong project management and work effectively with minimal supervision.
