About the opportunity

The Matilda Centre for Research in Mental Health and Substance Use provides a world-first synergy of leading prevention, early intervention, treatment research and translation programs in substance use and mental disorders. The Matilda Centre brings together researchers currently working across disorder silos (substance use, depression, suicide, anxiety, exercise physiology, dietetics, chronic disease) to share skills, synergise data, and harness new technologies to develop and trial innovative prevention and early intervention programs for substance use and mental disorders. The Centre is further developing its capacity to disseminate, translate and implement best-practice evidence for the alcohol and other drug and mental health workforces. Associate Professor Christina Marel is Program Lead of Treatment and Translation in Complex Populations at the Matilda Centre. Christina is currently growing her team of researchers to develop a program that will continue to build workforce capacity.

This is an exciting opportunity for a Training Facilitator in AOD to join the Matilda Centre and contribute to our growing program of work, focused on building the capacity of alcohol and other drug workforce to respond to mental health conditions. The project is funded by NSW Health and the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care. The role will involve delivering training workshops to alcohol and other drug services and workers, supporting moderation and facilitating an online community of practice for healthcare workers, analysing evaluation data, and producing content summaries and reports. The preferred candidate will be expected to contribute to the training and project activities. They will work directly with a team of junior and senior researchers.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Deliver evidence-based workforce training to alcohol and other drug workers across Australia
  • evaluate training programs, analyse data, and draft reports
  • consult with healthcare practitioners and other stakeholders and contribute to training and educational materials as appropriate
  • contribute to the moderation and facilitation of an online community of practice
  • deliver evidence-based workshops, seminars, webinars and other presentations to alcohol and other drug, mental health and other practitioner workers
  • contribute to academic research and present findings
  • foster open communication and collaboration within the team, addressing stakeholder queries and concerns in a timely manner, building trust within immediate work networks
  • maintain required certifications for ongoing professional practice as appropriate
  • monitor risk within the team, promote workplace health and safety, ensure alignment with university policies, and proactively address potential challenges
  • undertake other duties and projects appropriate within the classification level as required

About you

  • Master’s qualifications in psychology, social work or counselling
  • eligibility for registration as a psychologist with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW), OR Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA)
  • possess sophisticated training skills with proven experience in delivering workplace training
  • understanding and knowledge of the relationship between substance use and mental health disorders
  • ability to research, evaluate, and summarise relevant information from various sources
  • previous experience working with participants experiencing co-occurring mental and substance use disorders, psychological assessment, and interventions
  • excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with sound negotiating and conflict resolution skills and a demonstrated level of tact and discretion in dealing with day-to-day operational matters
  • demonstrated experience in building and maintaining effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • ability to organise and prioritise work when faced with conflicting deadlines and competing priorities, independently and autonomously
  • Australian driver’s license and willingness to travel (reimbursement available).
