ABOUT THE DIVISION

The Clubs and Volunteering Division provides professional and administrative support to a range of student engagement and student representative activities. Staff in the Division provide support in relation to the operations and governance of student representative bodies, including Students’ Council and departmental Committees, Clubs and Societies and UMSU Volunteer Programs. The Division supports activities and programs that are student initiated and student led.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Coordinator, Volunteering and Student Representation is responsible for providing support to Student Officer Bearers and Volunteer Program Directors, empowering them to effectively govern and operate UMSU Volunteer Programs, and other student-led activities (with the exception of Clubs and Societies and UMSU International). This position is also expected to drive the ongoing implementation of the UMSU Volunteering Framework.

This role is the escalation point for more complex issues related to UMSU Volunteer Programs/Student Representation, and provides authoritative advice and guidance to staff, student representatives, student directors of volunteer programs and student volunteers across all aspects of management of volunteers, volunteer programs, student representative bodies and committees.

Additionally, this position will oversee the planning and delivery of training programs for all registered volunteers, volunteer program directors, and student representatives.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Coordinator, Volunteering & Student Representation is a key member of the UMSU team, providing support and expertise to UMSU’s elected student representatives. This position oversees a small team and is accountable for the provision of advice and the oversight of resource management and relationship management. This role reports to the CEO.

ABOUT YOU

To succeed in this position, you will have significant experience in Extensive demonstrated experience in recruiting/working with volunteers; highly developed communication and problem-solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders.

You will be comfortable with high-level strategic planning, as well as rolling up your sleeves to work in an operational capacity. Your experience means that you’re confident as a mentor and able to provide effective onboarding and training to direct reports and student representatives.

Your interpersonal and relationship-building skills include the ability to communicate ideas effectively to different stakeholders, enabling students representatives to achieve their aims and the student body to get more out of their time at the University.

You have values consistent to the organisation and you have a working knowledge of accessibility, social inclusion and union principles that form the basis of your approach aimed at empowering a predominantly youth audience.

Essential skills include:

  • Completion of a degree, with previous, relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience;
  • Certificate IV Training & Assessment;
  • Extensive demonstrated experience in recruiting/working with volunteers;
  • Knowledge of National Standards for Involving Volunteers in Not-For-Profit Organisations;
  • Extensive experience in inducting and training volunteers and possess a clear understanding and commitment to the principles of volunteering;
  • Ability to consult and interact positively and widely with people from diverse backgrounds;
  • Highly developed written and verbal skills, including strong communication skills and the ability to write and present correspondence and project scoping documents;
  • Excellent computer skills including the ability maintain databases and use content management software for website updates; and
  • Commitment to principles of student unionism.
