headspace Parramatta, Mount Druitt and Penrith deliver the headspace Youth Early Psychosis Program. The headspace program offers an “open door”, easily accessible, early intervention service for young people wishing to obtain support for mental health or substance use issues. The headspace Early Psychosis program is a specialist service which focuses on providing comprehensive services to support young people who are at risk of developing a psychotic illness, or those who have experienced a first episode of psychosis.

Role Overview

The Psychiatry Registrar provides Medicare funded headspace clinical services, ensuring that the clinical activities delivered are within the relevant professional and individual scope of practice as a Psychiatrist; are evidenced based; are of high quality; and demonstrate a holistic approach to client management.

Duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Provide youth friendly, evidenced based focused Psychological Strategies/Psychological Therapy as specified by the referring GP under the Medicare Better Access Initiative.
  • Provide evidenced based group interventions to young people as specified by the referring GP under the Medicare Better Access Initiative
  • Ensure all data and reporting management is maintained. As per Medicare reporting requirements, provide reports to the referring GP at the required intervals.

Essential Criteria:

  • Current registration as a medical practitioner with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA)
  • Enrolled in the RANZCP Psychiatric Registrar Training Program
  • A minimum of one year clinical experience
  • Demonstrates clinical and procedural experience commensurate with clinical responsibilities of a Registrar
  • Able to work with professional supervision from more senior members of the profession or health team when performing novel, complex, or critical tasks
  • Demonstrated ability to provide high quality assessment and evidence based psychological interventions, within a stress-vulnerability and recovery framework for young people
  • Contribute to the evaluation and analysis of guidelines, policies and procedures applicable to their clinical/professional work and may be required to contribute to the supervision of discipline specific students.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage and work collaboratively with young people and their families/significant others
  • Demonstrated ability to collaboratively plan and coordinate individualised psychosocial interventions to meet the needs of young people with psychosis based on a case formulation approach
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of early psychosis rationale and principles including the developmental stages of young people and the impact that a first episode of psychosis has on their development and the impact on the family/significant others
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation such as the Mental Health Act (2007) and the Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act (1998) and other relevant legislation
  • Current Drivers License
