The Newpin program specialises in the development of emotional maturity and well-being of parents who have children placed in Out of Home Care due to child protection concerns.

About the opportunity:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Family Worker to assist in the important work of a Newpin Centre in Macgregor (ACT) on a full time contract until 31st December 2020. This role is responsible for providing centre based therapeutic support to families referred for the restoration of their child/ren or for family preservation. This role is focused on working intensively and therapeutically within the Newpin model and Newpin core values and is informed by attachment, developmental and trauma informed practice. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Provide informal and formal therapeutic interventions for groups, individual parents and children. This includes facilitating therapeutic support groups, contact visits for children in OOHC and their parents, playroom activities, time in the lounge room and lunch times
  • Plan for and facilitate psycho- educational groups as part of the components of the personal development program.
  • Work in partnership with parents to assess individual and family needs
  • Contribute towards the efficiency and effectiveness of the Newpin team
  • Participate in case conferences for families working towards restoration and those working toward family preservation to ensure a clear case plan is drawn up and agreed to by all parties

About You:

  • Tertiary qualifications such as a degree in Social Work, Psychology or Social Sciences with at least 2 years’ experience providing therapeutic support to children and families OR a Diploma in social Welfare
  • Demonstrated skills and experience facilitating therapeutic support and psycho- educational group work programs.
  • Ability to engage with families in crisis and working in partnership with them to achieve their goals
  • Understanding of child protection issues and an ability to conduct risk and family assessments using a strength based approach
  • Current drivers licence and NSW working with children’s check
