About the Opportunity

This is a full-time 6-month contract up until 30th December 2021 (with likely extension) Based in Nambucca Valley.

 As a Community and Family Worker you will be responsible for contributing to the development of a social innovation project called ‘Aboriginal Families Together’ the Nambucca Valley. The key focus is working with community and families to co-design better ways for improving the lives and futures of Aboriginal families.

You will be an integral member of the Children, Youth and Families team. You will be responsible for working with families in the Aboriginal Families Together project to assess and identify their strengths, needs and prioritise goals. You will help support parents/ carers to develop their skills, utilising role modelling and teaching strategies as culturally appropriate.

You will actively work with Aboriginal service providers to connect appropriate referrals to work with Aboriginal families and increase networking opportunities for Aboriginal families within the project. You will facilitate small community led projects including working with emerging partners on a co-design developed with and by the community which will inform a stage 2 business plan.

What you'll need to succeed

  • Uniting considers that being an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, is a genuine occupational qualification under s 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW)
  • Tertiary qualifications in Social Sciences and/or demonstrated relevant work experience with families, or equivalent and relevant to the field of work
  • Aboriginality and demonstrated ability in working culturally appropriately with Aboriginal people, families and communities
  • Ability to provide effective Aboriginal family assessment, goal setting and referral
  • Knowledge of child protection issues and an understanding of the issues impacting children and families
  • Ability to work flexible hours
  • Current drivers licence and willingness to transport families
  • Experience working on a community based program from idea phase through to implementation
  • Experience in community co-design and moving beyond consultation to actively fostering community voices in new ideas
