UnionsWA is the state's peak union council, representing over 30 affiliated unions which have over 150,000 members in Western Australia.

UnionsWA is looking for an individual to fill the role of a Work Health and Safety Officer. The WHS Officer will be responsible for the implementation an education campaign aimed at unions, workers, and safety representatives on the transition between the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1984 and the Work Health and Safety Act 2020.

The position will also provide support and advice to safety representatives, workers and unions to improve health and safety outcomes in workplaces. Including the development of information in print and digital format and the development and delivery of education and information sessions.

We require someone who can demonstrate high levels of initiative, is able to work with workers across all industries in Western Australia, liaise with a range of stakeholders and has a commitment to workplace health and safety and trade unionism.

This position is fixed term as it is funded by a four year grant from the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Training.

This position is advertised as full time, however UnionsWA will consider requests for part-time work or flexible working arrangements from applicants.

Selection Criteria

Essential

  • Knowledge of workplace health and safety legislation, policy and systems.
  • Proven experience to educate workers on workplace safety or other related topics.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships and partnerships with diverse groups of people and organisations.
  • Confidence and ability to present in front of groups of workers in a verity of situations and circumstances.
  • Ability to work autonomously and in a small team environment.
  • Highly developed written and communication skills.

Desirable

  • Understanding and commitment to the principles of trade unionism.
  • Experience in drafting workplace safety policy, codes, or guidance material.
  • Knowledge of the WA workers’ compensation system.
