The Young Workers Centre Assistant Outreach Coordinator works with the Young Workers Centre Outreach Coordinator and YWC Manager to plan and conduct an education, outreach and leadership development program, particularly focused on working with students. The role will also work as part of the Young Workers Centre to provide support and information to young workers as part of the Young Worker Advice Service.

The successful candidate will be enthusiastic, energetic, committed to progressive values and passionate about working with young workers to build power in their workplaces. They will work at the front line of the Service to promote the Service and recruit volunteers and activists. The Assistant Coordinator will principally work in Canberra, based from our Civic Office with offsite work regularly required, and some interstate travel may be required.

The Assistant Outreach Organiser will work in a team under the supervision of the UnionsACT Secretary or a delegate. The position is focused on working with students during term/semester and is a part-time, 3 month fixed-term contract commencing in late January 2020.

KEY TASKS AND DUTIES

  • Assist and support the Young Worker Centre Manager and Outreach Organiser as directed;
  • Perform outreach activities that promote the Service and the YWC generally, to young workers and relevant organisations;
  • Under direction from the YWC Manager, provide accurate information and basic support to young workers about their rights and refer young workers to other organisations according to operations protocols of the YWAS;
  • Assist in planning and conducting activities and events that effectively engage and assist young workers to build power in their workplaces;
  • Assist in planning and providing skills and leadership development for young workers;
  • Produce materials and content for various channels, including print media, social media and websites;
  • Other duties as required.

ESSENTIAL SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Demonstrated commitment to union values;
  • Confident verbal communication skills, and willingness and capacity to communicate, engage and motivate supporters and volunteers
  • Demonstrated willingness and capacity to organise a range of outreach activities and events;
  • Demonstrated computer literacy, and familiarity with social media and digital tools;
  • Self-motivated, and willing to take responsibility for tasks required to achieve campaign goals;
  • Australian drivers’ license;
  • Post-secondary qualification desired, but not essential.

CONDITIONS

  • Part-time position (12 hours per week)
  • Salary $21.26 p/h
  • 14.5% employer superannuation contribution
  • Fixed-term employment contract for 3 months, commencing late January 2020
  • 17.5% annual leave loading
  • Mobile phone provided or reimbursed
  • Work hours will include weekends and after-hours work.
