Our client, Mission Australia, is seeking a highly experienced Psychologist/Social Worker/Counsellor to mentor a small team of case workers in their organisation.

The program…

Youth on Track is an early intervention program for 10–17-year-olds at risk of long-term involvement in the criminal justice system. The young person will have had contact with police but have not yet received a supervised order with Juvenile Justice, however based on an actuarial screening tool developed by the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research has a greater chance of re-offending.

The young person's engagement in Youth on Track is voluntary.

The program aims to engage the family as a whole.

Your new job…

This new position provides mentoring, guidance and support to small team of case managers who are delivering Family Intervention via delivering Family Collaborative Practice within Youth on Track program at Blacktown.

Rather than having a therapeutic focus itself, this unique role will instead work alongside each of the case managers and focus on mentoring them in best practice and guiding with strategies to increase engagement of both youth and their families in this voluntary program. You will also report back to the Program Manager on what support has occurred and other potential resources may be required.

If you have not already completed it, the successful candidate will be required to complete a short training course in collaborative practice.

There is flexibility for this role to be worked in either Part Time or Full Time capacity. Due to funding at this stage this role is for a temporary 5 month period only, but will extend if possible.

Salary for this role is classified at level 5 in Mission Australia’s Enterprise Agreement. The role is based in Blacktown but covers the whole of Blacktown LGA therefore will require some travel as necessary.

What you’ll need to succeed…

We are looking for a highly experienced professional who has worked as either a Psychologist/Counsellor/ Social Worker for some time and has an interest in mentoring case managers to make this program great!

This newly created role is unique and only short term but will be a highly valued member of the team and urgently required so you will need to hit-the-ground-running.

You will have exceptional interpersonal skills, have an analytical mind with good problem-solving skills and creativity.

Selection Criteria…

  • Be a registered psychologist with full APHRA registration or a social worker registered with AASW or a counsellor accredited with Australian Counselling Association
  • At least 2 years’ experience in the respective fields
  • Experience with counselling and mentoring using the Collaborative Family Practice model
  • Demonstrated understanding of best practice criminogenic interventions related to behavioural and rehabilitation supports, the impact of substance use and knowledge of mental health issues
  • Effective listening and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Computer literacy, including the ability to use Microsoft Office
  • Actively support Mission Australia’s Reconciliation Action Plan, and demonstrate the ability to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds (see: www.missionaustralia.com.au/what-we-do/reconciliation-action-plan)
  • Positively and constructively represent our organisation to external contacts at all opportunities
  • Working with Children’s Check
  • Minimum Class C Drivers Licence
  • Ability to travel between locations and provide outreach support to clients
