Volunteer Board Director - Flexible Location

The Wilderness Society

It all started in Tasmania in the 70s with the successful campaign to stop the damming of the Franklin River. Forty five years later, the Wilderness Society is still here.

We’re here for remarkable places like the Kimberley, the Great Australian Bight and our biodiverse forests and bushlands. We’re here for endangered critters like the greater glider, swift parrot and numbat. We’re here with the power of nature-loving communities across Australia.

The Wilderness Society Ltd performs a range of functions that support the achievement of its Purpose, goals and objectives, operating nationally with Campaigning, Organising, Communications, Membership, Fundraising and Business Operations arms which work across several locations.

Our Board plays a crucial governance role for the organisation and comprises up to nine volunteer Directors, two of which may be appointed by the Board. We are currently seeking expressions of interest to nominate in our 2022 Election of Directors from Members with skills complementary to the existing skill set of the Board and to support the valuable work of The Wilderness Society. As leaders in the organisation, Directors work directly with the CEO and Collaborative Management Team.

In 2022, Directors may be elected from any of the following five regions: Victoria; Queensland; Northern Territory and South Australia; Tasmania; and Western Australia, with no vacancies existing in the Australian Capital Territory/New South Wales region.

Expressions of interest in nominating for election to the Board are sought from experienced individuals with:

  • Demonstrated commitment to the natural environment;
  • A commitment to and understanding of good governance and previous experience on a board or management committee; and
  • A range of leadership areas including governance, legal or advocacy.

Expertise in organisational leadership and/or strategic direction will be well regarded, and membership of the AICD would be highly valued. An inclusive and representative Board is necessary to increase our reach to all Australians. We encourage people from diverse backgrounds to apply. Diversity includes gender, LGBTQI+, age, First Nations people, persons from different cultures/religions and differing physical abilities (including neuro-diversity). Geo-diversity is also important and people from regional Australia are encouraged to apply.

Commitment Required

The Wilderness Society Ltd Directors serve a three-year term with eligibility for a second term nomination.

The Board currently meets most months by videoconference on the last Tuesday of the month (2 hours, 8pm Eastern time) and face to face approximately once a year on a weekend (travel provided). The time commitment for our Directors is approximately 10-12 hours per month, including relevant meeting preparation.

There is no requirement to be located in any specific location as The Wilderness Society is a national organisation with Directors from across the country, however financial membership of the organisation is a requirement for all nominees to the Board and Directors are required to hold a Director Identification Number before an appointment is made.

Should you wish to discuss this opportunity, please email [email protected] using the subject line: Volunteer Board Director enquiry via EthicalJobs and we will be in contact as soon as possible.

The Wilderness Society website makes available the organisation’s Constitution and recent annual reviews. Expressions of Interest remain open until the advertised closing date.
