The Salvation Army Youth Services offer an integrated suite of programs engaging with young people across Australia. Our services create intentional avenues for young people to explore opportunities, build support networks, and access, participate and contribute to their communities. Youth services provide a diverse range of programs which include housing and homelessness, driver training, education, employment and training, AOD support, social and community activities, specialist therapeutic responses and youth justice programs.

Tranmere Street Youth Refuge is a 6-bed crisis accommodation facility operated by The Salvation Army Youth Services in Fitzroy North. We provide accommodation and support to young people aged between 16 and 21. Our support workers create a therapeutic environment within the crisis accommodation setting and assist the case management team in the ongoing implementation of case management plans.

We are committed to working in partnership with young people to address the issues contributing to their unique experience of crisis & homelessness, with a particular focus on assisting young people to:

  • Develop life and living skills to prepare for independence
  • Address issues in relation to health & wellbeing
  • Promote opportunities to overcome exclusion and isolation
  • Explore education pathways and participation
  • Work towards long term sustainable housing

THE ROLE

This role is permanent part time 42.5 hours per fortnight and includes overnight sleepover shifts.

Week 1: Monday, Thursday, Saturday hrs 4:30pm-11:30pm (sleepover) 7:30am-8:30am and

Week 2: Monday, Wednesday hrs 4:30pm-11:30pm (sleepover) 7:30am-8:30am.

Responsibilities include:

  • ​Provide a safe and nurturing environment for all residents residing within the refuge setting.
  • Work in a manner consistent to the expectations of the Journey to Independence Model and that follows the framework of a Psychologically Informed Environment.
  • Assist residents to manage and maintain individual and shared living spaces.
  • Complete comprehensive intake and risk assessment for all refuge clients, incorporating adequate assessment of the needs of accompanying children.
  • Maintain accurate record keeping that meets legislative standards and are completed within a timely manner.
  • Ensure the safe management of the crisis accommodation program in conducting a comprehensive handover to colleagues.
  • Orient residents into the expectations of the Journey to Independence Model and appropriate behaviours for a successful refuge stay.
  • Work to the direction of case management plans in assisting young people to attend appointments relating to health, housing, finances, education, justice and social inclusion as required.
  • Assist residents with a range of activities in preparing for independent living: meals preparation; life and living skills; health and hygiene; recreation and exercise.
  • Assist in the daily cleaning and maintenance of the refuge environment to a high standard.
  • Provide informal support to all clients of the program including outreach clients residing in the community.
  • Facilitate residents' meetings with young people.

  • Capacity to deliver high quality support services to young people.
  • Knowledge of youth homelessness, crisis intervention and the ability to collaborate with other program areas within Youth Services.
  • Skills in engaging with the specified client group; demonstrated capacity to build effective relationships with clients based on social work, youth work and psychologically informed environments.
  • Demonstrated skills in engaging & working with young people with complex support needs including AOD, mental health, out of home care and adolescent violence.
  • Assessment skills and knowledge of a range of theories including attachment, trauma, child and adolescent development and strengths based approaches.
  • Demonstrated capacity to time manage within a crisis setting whiles maintaining required documentation and IT systems to DHHS and organisational standards.
  • Competent to work solo when required and respond effectively to critical incidents in a safe manner.

Tertiary qualification in social sciences, welfare or related field with a degree qualification preferred and relevant experience in a social service environment is essential. You will be required to provide a current and valid Victorian Working with Children Check and Victorian Drivers licence
