To work with people seeking asylum and refugees who are vulnerable and disadvantaged to provide an Emergency Relief, Case Work and support response.

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a cultural diverse team:

  • Based at Tinning Street, Brunswick
  • Part time 21 hours per week (Monday, Wednesday & Friday)

ABOUT THE ROLE

  • To conduct Emergency Relief Interviews in conjunction with other team members, students on placement etc.
  • To deliver Case Management services to clients with more complex needs
  • To develop networks and relationships with other Service providers and organisations
  • To ensure Administrative requirements in connection with Case Management of clients and development of information and resources which support clients and the Asylum Seeker & Refugee Service are developed and well maintained

About the Network:

The Salvation Army Asylum Seeker & Refugee Service (ASRS) offers a specialised Emergency Relief & Material Aid program and a range of support programs to people seeking asylum and refugees.

The ASRS Emergency Relief & Material Aid program provides specialised support to people seeking asylum, who reside in the Northern & Western suburbs of Melbourne. The program is designed to support people seeking asylum who are vulnerable, disadvantaged and find themselves in financial and other forms of immediate crisis.

ASRS also provides support to people seeking asylum and refugees with:

  • Chaplaincy program and Farsi Faith Fellowship
  • Support Group for Women and Children
  • Employment Program for people seeking asylum and refugees on temporary visas

The Salvation Army Doorways network operates throughout Australia. Each Doorways site provides support to vulnerable and disadvantaged people within the respective region, who find themselves in financial or other forms of immediate crisis.
Support is provided to clients through a case management framework that incorporates a person-centred and strength-based approach. Assistance provided may include a food voucher or food parcel, food, clothing, furniture and household goods, budgeting assistance, bill payment assistance, transport tickets, fuel vouchers, medical and pharmaceuticals vouchers, or referral into Financial Counselling, Case Management or other services.

Emergency relief may be a one off transaction or a number of episodes of support.

ABOUT YOU:

Qualifications and Experience:

Degree or Diploma qualification in a Welfare or Community Services discipline; or Cert IV with equivalent demonstrated experience in Emergency Relief and willingness to complete further approved training.

Specialist Competencies:

Asylum Seekers & Refugees:

  • Knowledge of the impact of war, conflict, torture and trauma on individuals and families
  • Ability to understand and engage with people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds
  • Sound knowledge of Emergency Relief Services
  • Demonstrated ability to formulate options and implement holistic strategies with individuals and families who are in crisis

Client assessment:

  • Uses appropriate information, tools and techniques to gather and analyse information
  • Uses relevant information to objectively assess client needs; Identifies and prioritises appropriate actions including referral

Case Management:

  • Identifies and implements case management processes appropriate to the needs of the client
  • Models of Intervention
  • Knowledge of general models of intervention in social work

Complex needs:

  • Works effectively with people who exhibit multiple/compounded service needs and/or are chronically disadvantaged
  • Recognises and identifies interrelated issues and needs and how they impact on the presenting need

Job Competencies:

  • Service Delivery
  • Looks for ways to exceed service user expectations; Respects boundaries and limits of own role and capabilities; advocates and negotiates effectively for service users

Requirements of the role:

  • A national police record check is required.
  • A current and valid Working with Children Check.

The successful applicant will demonstrate the following selection criteria:

  • Be able to positively support and emulate The Salvation Army's mission and values
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the context and complexities of the asylum process in Australia
  • Ability to understand and engage with people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds
  • Demonstrated ability to formulate options and implement holistic strategies with individuals and families in crisis
  • Have a relevant tertiary qualification in Social Work, Welfare or Community Services discipline; or a Cert IV with equivalent demonstrated experience in Emergency Relief
