The position is to develop therapeutic relationships with young people that improves their health and well being through case management, crisis intervention, advocacy, education, assessments and referrals and social connectedness. The role requires collaborating with multi discipline teams at our Goodna School with young people who are re-entering the school environment after periods of disengagements.

About YOS Lawnton School:

The Youth Outreach Service (YOS) Lawnton School is an Independent Non-State Accredited Special Assistance School providing a supportive positive learning environment where through flexible learning options, social supports and skilled education service, disengaged students can find hope and achieve their potential. The school is still developing its education and health and well being framework and is accredited to deliver education to years 10-12 at its two campus Lawnton and Goodna Schools.

The primary goal of YOS Lawnton is to reengage students back onto education and career pathways. The YOS Lawnton School is part of The Salvation Army Youth Outreach Service. The overall goals of YOS is to work with young people to overcome adversity and build independence through engagement and targeted education and social interventions. Besides the national educational curriculum, education would include social, emotional and living skills, and spiritual education.

The role:

In line with TSA organisation mission and the YOS service mission this role will be responsible for case work, social and emotional education, ensuring restorative justice and trauma informed practices are enacted and a that a positive learning environment for students and students at YOS Lawnton continues.

To be successful for this role, you will have (essential criteria):

  • An appreciation of and the ability and willingness to promote and support the values and ethos of The Salvation Army
  • Tertiary qualifications in Social service or similar discipline with a minimum Degree level qualification
  • High level of understanding of issues regarding disengaged young people from mainstream schools and ability to re-engage and motivate youth into educational/ training pathways
  • Demonstrated high level of communication and interpersonal skills including negotiation, conflict resolution and the ability to effectively create relationships with students and other stakeholders
  • Possess a sound working knowledge or be willing to acquire skills involved in trauma informed and restorative practices and motivational interviewing and outcome star
  • Possess a sound skillset or be willing to acquire skills that identifies the need and type of educational adjustments for students with a disability
  • Desirable to be able to deliver social and emotional workshops and group facilitation (especially in group circles and restorative justice practices)
  • Possess sound skillsets in providing encouraging reporting and assessment measures
  • Demonstrated experience in working with youth who require special assistance
  • Desirable to have experience in a youth work /mentoring/coaching environment and experience in conducting life skills/personal development programs
  • Proven experience in working with people of varying cultures, races, economic, social and educational background
  • Driver's license
  • Positive Notice Working with Children suitability card (Commission for Children and Young People Blue Card) or willingness to obtain
  • A commitment to the Christian faith and mission of The Salvation Army. An ability to offer pastoral assistance
  • Tertiary qualifications in community/youth services, education or similar discipline or minimum Certificate qualifications and/or extensive experience
