About the role

The Salvation Army is looking for an Aboriginal Engagement Worker to Network and engage with Aboriginal Communities in the region to promote the Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) Treatment Program at the Sunrise Centre and improve access for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Review systems and processes to ensure the delivery of culturally appropriate and safe services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

  • Implement the strategic and operational plan in collaboration with the team.
  • Work with the Sunrise Centre Case Workers and external stakeholders to identify appropriate referral pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants.
  • Network and engage with Aboriginal communities in the region to promote the Alcohol & Other Drugs Treatment Program at the Sunrise Centre and improve access for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Ensure The Salvation Army (TSA) Sunrise is highly accountable in providing best practice support to consumers.
  • Prepare reports to Manager detailing consumer and stakeholder activity as well as any gaps to service provision.
  • Coach staff on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander practice matters and cultural safety.
  • Maintain current knowledge of relevant Acts and guidelines as pertaining to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the Alcohol & Other Drug sector.
  • Maintain documentation and client files in accordance with The Salvation Army policies and procedures.
  • Review screening and assessment processes to ensure they are appropriate and culturally relevant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Review the Alcohol & Other Drugs Treatment program at the Sunrise Centre to ensure groups and activities are culturally appropriate.
  • Assist in the case management and group facilitation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants entering and exiting the Sunrise service.
  • Work within a framework which supports empowerment and encourages active participation in the community
  • Contribute toward overall program procedures and organisational policy development concerning service delivery to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.
  • Case management facilitation as required.
  • Provide opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to connect with their community and culture.
  • Review processes for family engagement for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Review family visiting areas and processes to ensure they are welcoming and culturally appropriate.
  • Network with other relevant organisations and agencies.
  • Participate in TSA Performance Appraisal process.
  • Develop Performance Plan for Professional Development in consultation with Line Manager.
  • Participate in professional development courses, workshops and forums.
  • Prepare for and participate in monthly supervision
  • Maintain knowledge and participate in relevant risk prevention
  • Report any identified risks to Line Manager & assist with the development of mitigation strategies.
  • Perform extra duties as requested by Manager and in accordance with the scope of this position. report significant incidents to Line Manager.

ABOUT YOU

  • Social Work / welfare or other relevant tertiary qualifications
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and Alcohol & Other Drugs qualifications.​
  • A national police record check is required.
  • A current and valid Working with Children Check.
  • A current Northern Territory Drivers licence.
  • All staff are expected to participate in regular supervision, annual performance review and approved training.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission and values of The Salvation Army.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Experience in the Alcohol & Other Drugs and/or mental health sector.
  • Understands individual role and team/unit service delivery objectives and aligns activities accordingly
  • Initiates and develops goals and plans and uses feedback to inform future planning
  • Considers the implications of immediate and longer-term organisational issues and how these might impact on the achievement of service delivery goals
  • Responds proactively to changing circumstances and adjusts plans and schedules when necessary
  • Accommodates and responds with initiative to changing service priorities and operating environments
  • Develops networks and cooperates with colleagues and partners within and outside The Salvation Army
  • Supports effective partnerships of Corps/Social Programs and other Departments/Mission Enterprises as applicable
