Restorative Justice Practitioner - Panel Member - Flexible Location

Transforming Justice Australia
  • This position is open to applicants across NSW

Are you a restorative practitioner with a solid background in working with complex matters which involve sexual assault or as a result of harmful sexual behaviours? Do you have experience working with those responsible, those harmed and the wider community? Do you want to have the flexibility to work as an Independent Contractor? Want to provide your skills to a new and emerging community-based restorative practice? Transforming Justice Australia is excited to be expanding our team of restorative practitioners and we’d love to hear from you.

  • Help us expand our innovative and survivor-led program for those harmed by sexual assault, and their community
  • Partner with a small and passionate team as an Independent Contractor in a flexible and supportive organisation
  • Transforming Justice Australia is auspiced by Community Restorative Centre

We want to hear from people from all backgrounds, including those who have worked in programs such as the National Redress Scheme, the Defence Abuse Response Taskforce, state based legislated restorative conferencing schemes, or in organisations working directly with those harmed and their families. The skills and experiences of First Nations people will be particularly valued, as will people from culturally diverse backgrounds.

The Opportunity

As an Independent Contractor on our Restorative Justice Practitioner Panel, you’ll be at the heart of a trauma-informed team who have developed an innovative restorative practice, centred on the needs of survivors of sexual harm. The role includes:

  • Joining a Specialist Practitioner Panel: You’ll join our panel of practitioners and receive referred matters as a consultant.
  • Applying our Practice Framework and Manual: We have developed a restorative framework for sexual assault and harmful sexual behaviours which is drawn from best and emerging practices internationally, and which is centred on the needs and wishes of survivors.
  • Advanced trauma-competency and cultural safety: You will bring deep understanding of client-centred approaches and intersectional understandings of power and control, including insight on how sexual assault impacts individuals, families and communities. You’ll work in culturally appropriate ways in recognition of the unique cultural needs and over-representation of First Nations people, people with disability, young people and culturally diverse people as victims of violence.
  • Work in collaboration: You will be able to engage with a broad range of professionals including the external clinical advisors/therapists as required. You’ll include many views in case development and have particular skills in working with survivors and their community, and liaising closely with our Practice Manager, Directors and external specialist advisors (including members of our Expert Panel).
  • High levels of practice experience: You will provide support, information and warm referral pathways, maintain confidentiality and approach the role from a client/survivor-led standpoint. You will also participate in regular clinical supervision and attend staff and partner agency meetings when necessary.

The hours you will be required will vary depending on the intake and referral process, as well as the complexity of the matters being allocated to you. No after-hours or weekend work is likely to occur.

Why partner with us?

Transforming Justice Australia’s purpose is to reduce the impact of sexual violence and we believe this is achievable by drawing on restorative frameworks and privileging the views and voices of people harmed by sexual abuse and violence.

Our values are integrity, dignity, collaboration, courage, compassion, passion, impact, diversity and creativity.

Our purpose and values reflect who we are, what we stand for and how we make decisions.

  • You will be part of an emerging practice which is setting a new standard in Australia for restorative responses to sexual harm
  • You will have the opportunity to partner with a community of practitioners and colleagues working with comparable approaches to sexual harm
  • Partner with a growing, committed and energetic team who are committed to collaboration, who value research, sharing ideas and open and inclusive planning, continuous information sharing and transparent work practices
  • Access the support of cultural and clinical supervision from external agencies in relation to restorative practice for sexual harm and working with First Nations communities

Transforming Justice Australia is a unique and emerging program which is transforming justice responses by placing those directly harmed at the centre. Restorative justice for survivors continues to develop in Australia, which presents expected challenges for emerging specialist practices such as ours – but we are a small and committed team dedicated to providing those harmed with trauma-informed and high-quality responses.

To partner with us, you’ll need:

  • To have an ABN and be prepared to work as an Independent Contractor
  • To be able to facilitate restorative justice processes for sexual harm and sexual assault. These may include face-to-face meetings or indirect forms of communication between participants, their families, community and supporters
  • To support the broader work program of TJA in the practice space as it evolves for example by working collaboratively on best practice, training and standards
  • To work collaboratively with other TJA facilitators or client specialists, as needed including working collaboratively, in partnership or through peer-to-peer supervision
  • To have a current NSW Working with Children Check and Criminal Record Check (please note, a criminal record is not a barrier to being considered for a role)
  • Hold or be able to acquire individual professional indemnity insurance and Public Liability Insurance

We are better for our diversity: Bring your whole self when partnering with us

We are committed to diversity and cultural safety. We are dedicated to attracting and developing our partners regardless of gender identity, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability and age.

Applications from Independent Contractors are encouraged from all sectors of the community, and we strongly encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and people from CALD backgrounds for the non-Identified positions.
