What does our dream writer look like?

You have a nose for stories—and platforms.

With two to ten years of experience as a feature writer or reporter, you can sniff out an inspiring story and craft it with nuance, economy of words (i.e., strong nouns and verbs) and careful language that reinforces the organisational story. In the process, you sense what story (or parts of a story) might fit well across social media platforms and channels.

You have a heart for justice and fullness of life.

Your personal mission for building a better world for all matches your professional one and informs your work. You care about the writing you do because you care about helping form others to respond more holistically to those living in poverty around the world. The story matters to you.

You have an ear for unique and diverse voices.

As you interview sources and research various assignments, you can distinguish and honour the various voices you’re hearing so that readers can hear them too. You know when to include quotes in a story so as to breathe life into a piece, and you know how to tailor a piece to serve diverse audiences as well.

You have an eye for details that inspire.

You’re one of those writers who can see the colour and unusual details that set apart a story and invite readers into it. You also know what not to include so readers aren’t bogged down with too many words because you know how to include only the specifics that distinguish and position the story.

You have agile hands to juggle many tasks.

Because you’re a pro, you know how to juggle and respect deadlines, genres and research, while navigating a range of topics and respecting the people who are passionate about each, such as addressing global poverty and empowering local communities, advocacy efforts, child sponsorship, church relations and Christian formation.

You are an independent collaborator.

You love managing your own schedule and independent assignments, but also are happy to play well with others. You know in your bones that collaboration always brings out the best in storytelling and so you welcome editorial feedback, brainstorming and opportunities to contribute to the collaborative process so that everyone—especially the organisational mission and audience—is served.

You are a follower of Jesus.

You walk through each day with a sense of God’s presence, wanting your life to reflect that of Jesus as you see him interact with others in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. That means integrity and character, service and concern for others define your lifestyle, interpersonal skills and hopes. Your work is an extension of your worship and flows out of a desire to love God and love your neighbour as yourself.

You are a believer.

The core values, mission, and vision of Transform Aid International/Baptist World Aid Australia resonate with you and you gladly participate in prayer and biblical reflection, wanting to grow so as to better understand, engage with and support the theology that informs the organisation’s development approach.
