About Us

The Spiers Centre is providing the opportunity for two Financial Counsellors to join our team.

We are a member of the Financial Counselling Network (FCN) which is a partnership of 14 community service organisations and local government providing a comprehensive range of integrated and person-centred services to reduce the drivers and impacts of financial hardship in the WA community.

We are recruiting two full-time financial counsellors with one position based in Marangaroo and the other in Joondalup. Successful candidates will assist individuals and families who are experiencing, or are at risk of experiencing, financial hardship to build their financial stability and resilience.

About You

You are a passionate and talented individual who is driven to deliver a quality service for our clients.

You will be willing to work with minimal supervision, travel and work from various locations in the northern metropolitan area, be a self-starter and a great problem solver with a passion to assisting people facing financial hardship.

You also must possess a current National Police Clearance, Working with Children’s Card and be willing to become a member and meet the requirements of the Financial Counsellor’s Association of WA.

About the role

As a Financial Counsellor you will provide a high-quality financial counselling service including best practice advocacy services for people experiencing financial difficulty. You will work collaboratively with clients and other service providers to determine appropriate strategies, referral pathways, advocacy and support over the phone, via videoconferencing and in person.

More broadly, you will work with the wider community to improve financial wellbeing and resilience through developing, organising and presenting community education. You will represent the program at relevant external forums and will work to develop strong relationships with other members of the Financial Counselling Network.

These positions are a fixed term until January 2022

Selection Criteria:

• A Diploma of Financial Counselling or willing to independently undertake necessary studies to obtain qualification
• The ability to effectively manage own workload, set priorities and work independently
• Demonstrated high level of communication skills, both written and oral, including interpersonal, negotiation and client centered advocacy skills
• Ability to relate and empathise with individuals experiencing financial hardship
• Ability to prepare and present community education, and to raise public awareness on relevant issues
• Well-developed computer skills (MS Word, MS Outlook, client management system)
• Strong knowledge of debt legislation, consumer credit law and bankruptcy legislation
• Willing to become a member and meet the requirements of the Financial Counsellor’s Association of WA
• Must be an Australian or New Zealand Citizen, or have permanent residency

• Possession of a current clear driver’s license and reliable vehicle
• Possession of current National Police clearance certificate
• Possession of Working with Children Check

Desirable criteria

• Previous experience in financial counselling or financial services
• Previous experience in community services
• Current knowledge of COVID 19 assistance schemes

Before an offer of employment can be made, a National Police Clearance of not older than 3 months and current unrestricted driver's license must be submitted.
