The Next Economy is a not for profit organisation committed to making the world a better place. It is no secret that our economic systems are not working for the majority of people on this planet. Even the well being of those with immense wealth is being undermined by the relentless degradation of the natural systems on which we all depend. And as economic inequality and insecurity grows, so do social and political conflicts over resources.
The good news is that all around the world, people are experimenting with new (and not-so-new) economic practices that not only meet the needs of people in equitable and just ways, but also protect and regenerate natural systems.
The purpose of The Next Economy is to not only generate greater awareness of the range of economic tools and practices we can use to ensure the long-term wellbeing of both people and planet, but also to support communities across Australia to implement these approaches to strengthen and stimulate their local economies. In doing so, our aim is to catalyse the emergence of economic systems that are:
The Energy Transitions Program Director will be responsible for the design and delivery of strategies and activities to support government, industry, unions, environment groups, social service organisations and community groups to manage the transition to a zero-emissions and socially just energy system. This support will be delivered primarily through two core programs: The Transitioning Australia Program (TAP) and the Building the Next Economy (BNE) Program.
Transitioning Australia Program (TAP): The Transitioning Australia Program provides tailored support to regions facing the closure of a major industry to develop transition plans. In developing the transition plans, the program manager will engage with a range of experts, industry and community representatives to develop strategies to manage workforce planning, industry adaptation, site rehabilitation, economic diversification, and to ensure the wellbeing of all groups across affected communities.
Building the Next Economy (BNE): The Building the Next Economy program supports regional areas ready to transform the way their economy works. It is a 12-month intensive program designed to support regions to identify strategies that strengthen the economy while also building long-term social, environmental, and economic resilience.
By the end of the program, participants will have developed detailed plans for how their region will manage the transition to a more resilient future, as well as investment-ready business cases for initiatives with the potential to build prosperity and local employment opportunities in ways that are both socially just and environmentally sustainable.
The best fit for this role is somebody who is:
